A high-stakes rescue operation is unfolding across the Pacific as the us ship missing crew search continues for sailors lost when a cargo vessel overturned during a powerful typhoon, leaving behind a scene as unforgiving as the storm that caused it.

Dramatic video and images released by the United States Coast Guard show members of the United States Air Force plunging into the open ocean in a race against time.

Elite Rescuers Deployed Into Open Waters

Footage captures Air Force pararescuemen jumping from a C-130 Hercules aircraft to rendezvous with a Coast Guard cutter on Sunday.

Once aboard, the highly trained teams moved toward the last known location of the vessel, identified as the Mariana, which first signaled distress to the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu on April 15.

The images show crews preparing for deep and dangerous dive operations. Search teams also deployed remotely operated underwater drones to probe the ship’s submerged interior—an underwater labyrinth where every second matters.

According to the Air Force, pararescuemen are among the military’s most elite forces, trained to carry out some of the most extreme rescue missions anywhere in the world.

Engine Failure and Typhoon Spell Disaster

The Coast Guard reported losing communication with the vessel on the evening of April 15.

Investigators later determined the 145-foot U.S.-registered cargo ship lost its starboard engine while battling Super Typhoon Sinlaku. At the time, the ship was roughly 100 miles north-northwest of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands.

The storm’s fury—like a hammer striking the ocean—overwhelmed the vessel, ultimately causing it to capsize.

Search efforts were initially slowed by extreme weather, but the overturned ship was finally located on Saturday, April 18.

One Confirmed Dead, Five Still Missing

Rescue teams made a grim discovery Monday evening when the body of one crew member was recovered. The search continues for five others who remain missing.

The Coast Guard has already combed more than 100,000 square nautical miles in an expansive and relentless effort.

International support has joined the mission, with assistance from the Japan Coast Guard and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

“Our hearts are with the families,” said Commander Preston Hieb, search and rescue mission coordinator for the Coast Guard Oceania District. He emphasized that crews are using every available resource in coordination with global partners.

Storm Leaves Trail of Destruction

Super Typhoon Sinlaku brought sustained winds reaching up to 150 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologist Nikki Nolan described it as the strongest storm to form in 2026.

The typhoon battered Saipan and nearby Tinian, leaving behind wind damage and widespread flooding.
