Utah Judge Orders Reality Stars Taylor Frankie Paul and Dakota Mortensen to Stay Apart After Explosive Domestic Violence Battle

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah courtroom became the center of a high-profile reality TV and domestic violence saga Thursday, where a judge delivered a blunt directive to Taylor Frankie Paul and Dakota Mortensen after weeks of escalating allegations, police investigations and public fallout: they must stay away from each other.

The decision comes as the former couple, both stars of The Secret Lives of Mormon Housewives, face competing accusations of abuse and dueling petitions for protective orders in a case that has already shaken two major television productions and drawn national attention.

Court Draws a Hard Line in Volatile Relationship

Third District Court Commissioner Russell Minas ultimately granted mutual protective orders, making the separation between the pair official and legally enforceable.

He ordered both Paul, 31, and Mortensen, 33, to stay 100 feet apart for three years, warning that any violation would lead to criminal charges.

“All of the evidence seems to suggest that’s a bad idea,” Minas said, referring to the pair being in the same place at the same time.

He also delivered a direct message to the former couple about the stakes involved.

“I’m hoping that you’re not people who just thrive on the drama and the conflict,” he said. “You’ve got to put your child first and shield the child from this conflict.”

Inside a Tense but Controlled Courtroom

The hearing, which lasted nearly two hours, marked the first time Paul and Mortensen had appeared together publicly since their dispute exploded into headlines involving domestic violence allegations and a viral altercation video that helped derail production plans tied to The Secret Lives of Mormon Housewives and The Bachelorette, where Paul had been expected to lead.

Despite the intensity of the case, the courtroom atmosphere remained controlled. Neither Paul nor Mortensen acknowledged each other during the proceedings. Both appeared calm, attentive and respectful as attorneys argued over protective orders and custody of their 2-year-old son, Ever.

Paul arrived late, wearing a neutral-toned outfit and carrying a Louis Vuitton tote, a detail that did not go unnoticed by observers familiar with her public persona.

Custody Decision Delayed as Court Seeks More Information

While the judge issued protective orders, he postponed a final ruling on custody arrangements, saying he needed additional time and a review from the Department of Child and Family Services.

A written recommendation on parenting time is expected by May 11, with a review hearing scheduled for June 1.

Legal Teams Clash Over Allegations and Accountability

Attorneys for both sides painted sharply different narratives, each urging the court to side with their client and dismiss the other’s claims.

Eric Swinyard, representing Paul, said the outcome on the protective order was what they expected.

“What we wanted on the [domestic violence] front was for the relationship to be over,” he said. “We wanted orders in place.”

He also pointed to Paul’s courtroom statements about accountability.

“Taylor was incredibly candid with the court that she is not perfect and owned her faults, which is in direct contrast to how the other party presented their argument, despite evidence and input from law enforcement that showed otherwise,” Swinyard said.

Swinyard also addressed the leaked 2023 video that showed a physical altercation between Paul and Mortensen, which surfaced shortly before her planned Bachelorette season launch.

“I understand he denies having done this, but a lot of information lends itself to Dakota leaking this or, at least at a very minimum, having his fingerprints all over this,” he said. “He wants to literally destroy her.”

He acknowledged Paul’s actions in the video.

“My client has zero excuses for this. ... It is a tragedy that Dakota and my client’s daughter were the victims of her actions,” he said.

Brent Hall, Mortensen’s attorney, rejected the accusation that his client leaked the footage, stating, “He told his publicist not to release the video.”

Hall said Mortensen sought the protective order to end the cycle of violence.

“to break the cycle” and to “protect his child, to stop the violence.”

He also questioned Paul’s intent.

“not designed to protect her son; it’s designed to protect her image.”

Emotional Aftermath in a Small Courtroom

Outside the legal arguments, the human toll became visible after the ruling.

In a small 28-seat courtroom, Paul became emotional as she said goodbye to Mortensen’s family, crying while hugging his mother, who was also in tears.

No other cast members from The Secret Lives of Mormon Housewives were present, though both families attended in support.

Mortensen’s friend and roommate, Cru Eaton, sharply criticized the decision.

“It’s a joke and pathetic,” he said. He also told NBC News, “Taylor needs help, and I don’t trust her with Ever,” adding, “It’s almost like an impossible battle when she’s backed by ABC and Hulu.”

A Larger Entertainment Fallout

The legal battle has already spilled into the entertainment industry.

Paul was removed from The Bachelorette following renewed attention on the domestic violence investigation tied to the 2023 incident. The controversy also contributed to the shelving of production plans after footage of the altercation resurfaced publicly.

She previously pleaded guilty in abeyance to aggravated assault related to the February 2023 incident, while other charges, including assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child, were dismissed with prejudice.

Mortensen has also faced professional consequences, including being edited out of Vanderpump Villa.

Cast members of The Secret Lives of Mormon Housewives reportedly raised concerns with ABC executives in March, leading to a temporary pause in filming. Production later resumed April 21.

What Happens Next

The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office has already declined to pursue charges in multiple related cases, citing lack of evidence and statute of limitations issues. Local authorities have also opted not to file charges in recent reports from both parties.

For now, the court’s message is clear: the relationship that fueled years of conflict, accusations and public scrutiny is legally over, and any further contact could carry criminal consequences.

Whether that order finally ends the volatility surrounding Paul and Mortensen remains an open question as custody decisions and future hearings approach.
