Vast $500M Funding Fuels Race to Build the Next Generation of Space Stations

Vast $500M Funding

The push to establish humanity’s long-term presence in orbit just received a powerful boost. Vast $500M Funding was announced Thursday as the California-based aerospace company secured a massive new investment aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation commercial space stations.

The fresh capital signals growing confidence in a rapidly emerging space economy—one where private companies aim to replace aging government infrastructure in orbit and open the door to commercial research, manufacturing, and human habitation beyond Earth.

$500 Million Investment Targets the Future of Space Living

Vast revealed it raised $500 million to advance its mission of enabling people to live and work in space for extended periods.

The funding will help the company develop low-Earth orbit space stations and future habitats designed for destinations as distant as the Moon and Mars. Vast also plans to expand systems that support a growing commercial space economy while strengthening capabilities tied to national defense partnerships.

“This investment underscores the market’s strong conviction in both our strategy and our engineering,” said Max Haot.

According to Haot, the low-Earth orbit economy is approaching a critical turning point, where demand for microgravity research and space manufacturing is expected to surge.

He said Vast’s Haven space stations are designed to offer safe and cost-effective access to space-based research environments, allowing governments and commercial clients to tap into the next era of orbital innovation.

Major Investors Back the Vision

The financing round was led by Balerion Space Ventures, with participation from a roster of global investors including:

  • In-Q-Tel

  • Qatar Investment Authority

  • Mitsui & Co.

  • MUFG

  • Nikon Corporation

  • Stellar Ventures

  • Space Capital

  • Earthrise Ventures

Entrepreneur Jed McCaleb, the company’s founder and earliest investor, also joined the round.

As part of the agreement, A.C. Charania—an advisor to Balerion and former chief technologist at NASA—will join Vast’s board.

Charania praised the company’s engineering achievements, noting that Vast has already designed, built, and flown its own spacecraft.

Haven Demo Mission Proved Key Technologies

Last month, Vast successfully completed the mission of Haven Demo, a spacecraft designed to test critical technologies for future space stations.

According to Charania, the demonstration helped reduce technical risks ahead of the company’s next milestone: Haven-1, a commercial space station currently under development.

“Haven stations will play a critical role in maintaining a continuous human presence in orbit,” Charania said. “They also give nations around the world an opportunity to strengthen leadership in space.”

Roadmap to a Commercial Space Station

Vast is targeting several major milestones in the coming years.

The company plans to launch Haven-1 in 2027, which it hopes will become the world’s first commercial space station.

Vast also recently secured a private astronaut mission contract with NASA, marking another step toward integrating private sector platforms with government space operations.

Beyond that, the company aims to compete for the Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destinations Phase 2 program, a NASA initiative to build a successor to the aging International Space Station.

Since its founding in 2021, Vast has rapidly expanded its space hardware design and manufacturing capabilities. Engineers recently demonstrated those capabilities through the launch, operation, and controlled deorbit of Haven Demo, an in-orbit testing platform designed to validate key station technologies.

Building Toward a Permanent Human Presence in Orbit

Founder Jed McCaleb described the effort as a long-term mission to transform humanity’s relationship with space.

“Vast was founded with a vision of billions of people living and thriving in space,” McCaleb said.

He noted that the company’s strategy relies on building real hardware, testing it in orbit, and refining designs through rapid iteration—an approach meant to speed progress while reducing costs.

The company says its vertically integrated manufacturing system has already delivered a tenfold reduction in structural manufacturing costs compared with traditional space station programs.

More Than $1 Billion Invested in Space Infrastructure

With the latest funding, total investment in Vast’s space station technologies and facilities has surpassed $1 billion.

The newest round includes $300 million in Series A equity financing and $200 million in debt. The capital will support development of the Haven station series and expand Vast’s workforce and facilities.

Part of the funding will go toward Haven-2, a proposed successor to the International Space Station designed to ensure continuous human presence in low-Earth orbit for the United States and its allies.

Company Overview

Headquartered in Long Beach, Vast employs more than 1,000 workers and has built manufacturing facilities capable of producing America’s next generation of orbital habitats.

The company ultimately plans to develop:

  • Future habitats for the Moon and Mars

  • Dedicated government space stations

  • Crewed systems designed to support the expanding space economy

Following the success of Haven Demo in 2025, Vast now stands as the only operational commercial space station company that has flown and operated its own spacecraft.

If the company’s roadmap holds, Haven-1 will launch in 2027, with additional modules following to enable permanent human presence in orbit by 2030.
