Vibe Coding is rapidly becoming a defining trend in the future of software development—and Google is leading the charge with its AI agents Jules and Opal.

While vibe coding may sound like a casual, even lazy approach to development, its impact on workflow efficiency and code accessibility is undeniable.

What Is Vibe Coding?

At its core, vibe coding is about letting AI handle the heavy lifting. Developers describe a desired function or app, let AI write the code, and then test and tweak it until it works.

As BGR explains, this approach has opened coding up to beginners and non-engineers who might otherwise struggle to create functional code.

“It’s a way to open up the world of coding to people who might otherwise struggle,” BGR reports.

However, not everyone is convinced. Andrew Ng, cofounder of Google Brain, criticized the term, stating that it misrepresents the careful thinking real developers must apply—even when using AI tools.

Google introduced Jules, an AI-powered coding assistant, in December 2024. Now available to more users in public beta, Jules is built to support developers by generating and correcting code while users continue working.

At Google I/O 2025, the company announced Opal, a more advanced agent designed specifically for vibe coding. Accessible now via Google Labs, Opal lets users build mini-apps by simply using natural language commands like: “Create an app to order breakfast.”

The agent can then generate, package, and share the app with minimal developer input, making it easier than ever to get functional software up and running.

The Risks Behind the Vibes

While the benefits of vibe coding are clear—speed, accessibility, and ease—there are risks, especially for those who don’t understand what the AI is doing. One venture capitalist recently revealed that an AI-powered project built in Replit was completely deleted when the AI “panicked.”

“Despite hours of work, the entire database was erased,” the developer said, highlighting the unpredictability of relying too heavily on AI.

Security experts warn that using AI-generated code without proper understanding could introduce bugs or vulnerabilities. Critics argue that this trend might be encouraging superficial development skills.
