Wladimir Klitschko is asking a Los Angeles probate judge for something much more specific than guardianship of his daughter Kaya.

He wants legal authority to protect what the 11-year-old may inherit from her mother, Hayden Panettiere — and his Sept. 24 filing suggests he believes waiting for the ordinary probate process could put some of those assets at risk.

Klitschko already has had full custody of Kaya for most of her life. His new petition concerns a guardianship of her estate, meaning Kaya’s money and property interests, rather than who raises her. The distinction matters.

Panettiere, known for Heroes and Nashville, died Aug. 16 at age 36 after being found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has since ruled her death an accident caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl and several other drugs. Police and federal authorities, however, have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. CBS News

Kaya is identified in the court filing as Panettiere’s sole heir. Because she is a minor, Klitschko is asking the court to temporarily place him in a position where he can act for her financially, open the probate matter and nominate someone to administer Panettiere’s estate. A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 8.

That is where this case becomes more than routine estate administration.

Klitschko’s petition alleges that Panettiere and others had already taken security precautions before her death because of concerns that someone had gained unauthorized access to her Los Angeles residence. Locks were changed, according to the filing, and designer clothing and other valuables were moved.

The filing goes further. Klitschko says he believes non-family members formerly connected to Panettiere accessed and destroyed her emails. He also says he was informed that jewelry and other personal belongings have disappeared or cannot be accounted for.

Klitschko also says federal investigators possess some of Panettiere’s property. His concern is that, without an authorized estate representative, there may be nobody legally positioned to demand the return of those items, inventory them or determine what remains missing once investigators release them.

California probate procedure explains the urgency. A temporary guardian can be appointed before the normal guardianship process is completed when immediate action is necessary. A guardian of a minor’s estate then assumes strict fiduciary obligations — collecting and protecting property, keeping it separate and accounting to the court for how it is handled. Self-Help Center

Probate itself requires appointment of a personal representative who gathers the deceased person’s property, deals with debts and ultimately distributes remaining assets to those legally entitled to receive them.

So, the key issue before the court is not whether Kaya inherits from her mother. The filing says she does.

The immediate question is who gets the legal power to protect that inheritance while the estate is being assembled — particularly when the petition itself claims some of the property may already be missing.

Panettiere had spoken publicly about Kaya before her death. In her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she described giving Klitschko full custody as among the most painful decisions of her life while discussing her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression. Kaya had lived full-time with her father since early childhood.

For Kaya, the Oct. 8 hearing could therefore become the first meaningful legal step in determining who will stand between an 11-year-old beneficiary and whatever remains to be identified, recovered and preserved from her mother’s estate.
