The WNBA has become the latest battleground in the increasingly heated national debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports, with players, union officials, political activists and former NBA players weighing in on an issue that has moved well beyond the basketball court.

The controversy intensified after former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom announced that he was “declaring” for the 2027 WNBA Draft. Freedom, who has become an outspoken conservative political activist since leaving the NBA, said he was challenging what he described as the league’s eligibility standards and arguing that its rules should be applied equally.

The WNBA Players Association responded by warning that its members should not be turned into political instruments.

“A MESSAGE FROM WNBPA PLAYER LEADERSHIP,” the union said in a statement. The WNBPA said it represents more than 200 players with different backgrounds, experiences and opinions and emphasized its support for “justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.”

“Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm,” the statement said. “We will continue to have hard conversations. But we will not be used as political pawns.”

Enes Kanter Freedom Challenges WNBA Eligibility

Freedom's announcement came amid an expanding debate over the eligibility of transgender athletes in women's sports.

In his social media statement, Freedom said his intention was not to mock or disrespect anyone. Instead, he argued that the league should apply its rules consistently.

“After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I’m officially declaring myself a WNBA prospect,” Freedom wrote.

He said his team had reviewed the WNBA's eligibility requirements and concluded that he could declare for the 2027 draft. Freedom also said he understood his announcement would provoke strong reactions but insisted his goal was to challenge the application of the league's rules.

Self-Identification not Outlined by WNBA

The WNBA's own published eligibility information, however, does not establish the broad self-identification standard Freedom described. The league's official draft information says domestic entrants generally must be at least 22 years old during the draft year and meet college-eligibility requirements, while international entrants must meet separate age requirements.

The league also completed a new seven-year collective bargaining agreement in May 2026. The agreement, which runs through 2032, represents a major change in compensation and working conditions for WNBA players.

Sophie Cunningham's Comments Put Debate in Spotlight on the WNBA

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has become one of the most prominent WNBA players involved in the debate.

Cunningham said she had received criticism suggesting that she hated transgender people, but rejected that characterization. She said she wanted to approach the issue from what she described as a desire to protect girls and women competing in sports.

“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'” Cunningham said in comments cited in the material surrounding the controversy.

Is Love the Answer?

Cunningham then said she believed love also required honesty and argued that young girls should not have to compete against athletes she described as biological males.

The comments generated significant reaction because Cunningham's position placed her at odds with some other voices associated with the league. Her comments also became part of a larger political discussion about how women's sports should handle transgender participation.

Cunningham, who currently plays for the Indiana Fever, was selected by Phoenix in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft and joined Indiana in a 2025 trade. The WNBA lists her as a guard with seven years of professional experience.

Politics Have Long Been Part of the WNBA

The current dispute is not the first time politics have entered the WNBA.

League players became particularly active politically during the 2020 season, when social justice issues became a central part of the national conversation.

Players and the union publicly challenged then-Atlanta Dream co-owner Kelly Loeffler, a Republican U.S. senator from Georgia who opposed some of the players' activism.

Former WNBA player and current broadcaster Sue Bird has previously described the conflict as an example of politics intersecting with the business of the league.

Bird and other players ultimately supported Democrat Raphael Warnock in his 2020 election challenge against Loeffler. Warnock won the election, while Loeffler later sold her stake in the Dream.

That history helps explain why the latest controversy has generated concern about outside political interests attempting to influence the league's public image.

The WNBA and WNBPA have also faced broader concerns over hateful and abusive messages directed at players.

In July, the league and union said they had held discussions about an increase in racist, hateful and abusive messages and pledged to strengthen security resources and communication between the two organizations.

Cheryl Miller and Sue Bird Call for League Unity

Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller has argued that WNBA players and the union need to maintain the same level of unity they demonstrated during collective bargaining negotiations.

During a broadcast, Miller said she wanted to see players rally around the WNBA's brand and prevent outside groups from taking control of the league's narrative.

Sue Bird similarly argued that difficult issues should be handled through leadership and internal discussion rather than allowing outside groups to use the league to advance their own agendas.

The comments come at a critical time for the WNBA. The league is experiencing significant growth, has completed a major new collective bargaining agreement and is entering its 30th season with increased attention from fans, media organizations and investors.

That growth has also brought increased scrutiny.

A Debate That Extends Beyond Basketball

The transgender-athlete debate has created divisions not only between political factions but also among athletes and supporters of women's sports.

Some argue that transgender athletes should be permitted to participate under inclusive policies, while others contend that biological differences can affect competitive fairness and that women's sports require separate protections.

The WNBPA's statement attempted to draw a distinction between having difficult conversations and allowing political organizations or activists to define the league's identity.

The union urged fans to report abusive behavior at games and online and encouraged supporters to contact elected officials about strengthening Title IX, the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education programs receiving federal funding.

Meanwhile, Freedom's WNBA declaration has added another highly visible political dimension to the controversy. Although his announcement does not mean he will actually be eligible to play in the league, it has brought renewed attention to the WNBA's policies and the broader debate surrounding women's sports.

The challenge is increasingly about maintaining control of its own identity while navigating disagreements among players, fans and outside political voices.

The controversy also illustrates the complicated position professional sports leagues occupy in modern American culture. Players have become influential public figures, and issues involving gender, race, politics and social policy can quickly become part of the sports conversation.

As women's Basketball continues to expand, its leaders and players will have to determine how much of that conversation belongs inside the basketball arena — and how much should remain outside it.
