A 31-year-old woman was brutally killed by a large alligator while swimming in a Florida river on Sunday, in a terrifying attack that has left authorities and the public stunned by the sudden violence of nature.

The victim, her boyfriend, and her best friend had been hiking near the Econlockhatchee River in Seminole County, just north of Orlando, when they stopped to cool off in about three feet of water. Suddenly, a powerful alligator lunged, biting the woman on both arms.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesperson Chad Weber, the boyfriend fought desperately to free her from the animal’s jaws while calling 911.

“The boyfriend was the one that made the [911] phone call. He was trying to get her from the alligator’s mouth,” Weber said at a news conference.

Tragically, the woman died on the way to the hospital despite rapid response efforts.

Two massive alligators — one 12 feet long and the other 13 feet long — have since been captured in the area. Officials noted that 13 feet is considered an exceptionally large specimen for the species.

Maj. Jay Russell with the FWC described the incident as “incredibly tragic.”

This shocking attack serves as a grim reminder that even in populated parts of Florida, the wild dangers of its native wildlife are never far away. The Econlockhatchee River, like many waterways in the state, is home to alligators that can become aggressive when encountering humans in their territory. The fact that the attack occurred in relatively shallow water highlights how quickly an innocent dip can turn deadly.

The timing is particularly unsettling, coming just two days after a 28-year-old man was killed by a crocodile on a popular beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Together, these incidents underscore the importance of respecting natural habitats and heeding safety guidelines when venturing into areas where large predators roam.

As investigations continue and the captured alligators are examined, the community mourns a young life lost in a brutal and unexpected encounter with one of Florida’s most iconic — and dangerous — animals.
