In the 2024 presidential election, there’s been a lot of talk about the apparent “gender gap” where women are more likely to back Vice President Harris and men are more likely to support former President Trump.
This trend is inspiring political debates about whether Harris or Trump needs to put in more work to appeal to the opposite gender. With Election Day almost one week away, the vice president has significantly boosted her attempts to make inroads with men across the country.
However, the gender gap being reflected in polls goes far deeper than many people realize. Across social media, Reddit, and other online forums, women have discussed “cancelling out” votes from their Trump-supporting husbands and even voting for the vice president “in secret.”
Fearful to vote openly
Over the years, America’s political scene has gotten especially hostile and divisive. Many people view folks with opposing views as the enemy, rather than fellow citizens with differences of opinions.
With the 2024 presidential election expected to be quite close, online posts make it clear that many married couples differ on politics. While political differences in a marriage aren’t inherently bad, a spouse feeling the need to “hide” their vote from the other, in fear of the latter’s reaction, is indeed dangerous.
