Xi Warns Trump of “Clashes and Even Conflicts” Over Taiwan in High-Stakes Beijing Summit as Trade and Iran Tensions Simmer

BEIJING — A warning that rattles the room

A tense geopolitical message from China’s top leadership set the tone in Beijing as Xi Jinping told Donald Trump that the Taiwan issue could trigger “clashes and even conflicts” if not handled carefully, underscoring just how fragile U.S.-China relations remain despite a public show of warmth.

The warning came during a closed-door meeting that stretched roughly two hours and 15 minutes, as the world’s two largest economies tried to steady ties shaken by trade disputes, military tensions, and uncertainty over global conflicts.

A relationship under pressure but publicly calm

The summit unfolded against a backdrop of efforts to stabilize trade relations after last year’s tariff war and growing concerns over the U.S. war with Iran.

Despite the high-stakes agenda, the public optics were cordial. The two leaders later visited Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven, presenting an image of diplomacy and restraint.

When asked about the talks, Trump called them “great” and added that China is a beautiful, incredible place. Both leaders avoided answering questions about whether Taiwan was directly discussed.

Taiwan emerges as the most dangerous flashpoint

Behind closed doors, however, Beijing made its position unmistakably clear.

According to a readout posted on X by Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, Xi stressed that “the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.”

Xi also warned that “‘Taiwan independence’ and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water,” adding that maintaining stability across the Taiwan Strait is a shared responsibility.

Trade tensions ease, but distrust remains

On economic ties, Xi struck a more conciliatory tone, according to state-run outlet Xinhua, describing China-U.S. trade as mutually beneficial and highlighting recent progress in negotiations.

“China-U.S. economic ties are mutually beneficial and win-win in nature,” Xi said, according to Xinhua.

He also referenced what he called “generally balanced and positive outcomes” from recent trade talks, adding that “trade wars have no winner” and urging both sides to maintain momentum through “equal-footed consultation.”

A carefully staged diplomatic opening

The day began with a formal handshake outside Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, accompanied by a brass band, marching units, and children waving both American and Chinese flags.

Inside, Xi said, “A stable bilateral relationship is good for the world. We should be partners, not rivals.”

Trump echoed a similar tone, emphasizing his personal rapport with Xi, calling him a friend and a “great leader,” and saying, “We’re going to have a fantastic future together.”

Business giants in the spotlight

The summit also drew major U.S. business leaders, including Elon Musk of Tesla, Jensen Huang of Nvidia, and Tim Cook of Apple.

Chinese state media CCTV reported that Xi met with the executives at the Great Hall of the People, where he signaled that China’s market would continue to open wider.

Xi told them he believed U.S. companies would find “broader prospects” in China, while Trump had said ahead of the visit that he planned to push for China to “open up.”

After the meeting, Musk said “many good things” had been achieved, while Cook offered reporters a peace sign and a thumbs-up.

Iran conflict adds another layer of tension

Beyond trade and Taiwan, the U.S. war with Iran loomed over the talks. Trump has been pursuing a potential deal with Tehran, though negotiations have stalled amid rising tensions over the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump has said an early April truce that paused direct U.S.-Iran fighting is on “life support.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Fox News he expects Iran to come up in discussions, warning that “any support for Iran would obviously be detrimental for our relationship.”

China’s role as a major importer of Middle Eastern oil and the world’s largest buyer of Iranian crude adds strategic weight to its position in any broader regional escalation.

Taiwan remains the ultimate red line

The Taiwan question continues to sit at the center of U.S.-China friction. Beijing views the island as part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to achieve reunification.

The United States has provided military support to Taiwan and opposes any unilateral change to the status quo, while maintaining strategic ambiguity over whether it would intervene militarily in a conflict.

Analysts say Taiwan’s semiconductor dominance and geopolitical position make it one of the most sensitive issues in global security, and one that could be shaped by any shift in U.S.-China negotiations.

A fragile pause in a long rivalry

Just over a year ago, relations between Washington and Beijing were at one of their lowest points, marked by tariffs exceeding 100 percent, export restrictions, and disputes over semiconductors, rare earths, student visas, and agricultural trade.

While both sides have since scaled back some measures, the underlying competition remains unresolved.

For now, the Beijing summit delivered a mix of public optimism and private warnings, with both leaders signaling cooperation while leaving the most dangerous disagreements, especially Taiwan, firmly unsettled.
