Inside the Murder-for-Hire Case

  • Prosecutors allege Yella Beezy paid $40,000 to arrange rapper MO3’s 2020 murder.
  • Bank withdrawals, disputed text messages, and conflicting witness accounts have become central to the trial.
  • Defense attorneys exposed gaps in the financial evidence and challenged testimony linking Conway to the killing.

DALLAS, Texas — A $40,000 cash withdrawal, disputed text messages, and a prosecution witness who now claims he lied under oath have created serious questions in the capital murder trial of Dallas rapper Yella Beezy.

As proceedings prepare to resume Monday, November 9, prosecutors must overcome a central problem: proving that money withdrawn from the defendant’s bank account actually financed a murder.

Markies Conway, professionally known as Yella Beezy, is accused of arranging the November 11, 2020, killing of fellow Dallas rapper Melvin Noble, known as MO3, who was ambushed and fatally shot along Interstate 35E.

Prosecutors allege Conway paid $40,000 to have Noble killed following a longstanding feud. Conway has pleaded not guilty.

The alleged gunman, Kewon White, was convicted of capital murder in September 2026 and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, White’s conviction does not establish Conway’s involvement.

During Friday’s proceedings, defense attorney Toby Shook challenged Dallas Police Detective Eric Barnes over financial transactions prosecutors contend support their murder-for-hire allegations.

According to testimony presented November 6, Conway withdrew $40,000 from a Frisco bank on November 20, nine days after Noble’s killing.

But under cross-examination, Barnes acknowledged he had no direct knowledge of how Conway spent that money.

The defense also established that Conway regularly made substantial cash withdrawals, including after receiving a $350,000 record-label payment. An Instagram video dated November 23 showed Conway displaying numerous $100 bills, evidence his attorneys argued contradicted allegations that he had already distributed the withdrawn money.

An equally important issue concerns whether investigators can trace the money.

Although White possessed cash bundled with rubber bands, the detective acknowledged that investigators could not establish through Federal Reserve records that those bills originated from Conway’s bank.

A suspicious withdrawal may support an inference. It does not, standing alone, establish who received the money or why.

Another dispute involves text messages allegedly sent by Conway to his girlfriend two days before Noble’s death. Prosecutors interpreted the communications as evidence Conway had individuals available to commit shootings.

Judge Chika Anyiam admitted a redacted version of the messages but sustained a defense objection when prosecutors attempted to directly connect the language to the alleged murder-for-hire arrangement.

Admission into evidence does not mean a judge has determined the prosecution’s interpretation is correct.

Perhaps the prosecution’s greatest difficulty involves Theodore Thomas, also known as rapper Jose Bodega.

Thomas previously told a grand jury that Conway was connected to the alleged payment. During trial, however, he disavowed that testimony, claiming he fabricated the account because he feared substantial federal prison exposure.

The judge instructed jurors that his earlier grand jury statements could be considered when evaluating credibility, not as substantive proof of Conway’s guilt.

The defense subsequently challenged the account of a purported meeting outside a Dallas barbershop. Cell-tower evidence placed Conway’s telephone approximately 40 miles away, in Frisco. Barnes acknowledged investigators possessed no independent evidence placing Conway at that meeting.

Phone-location evidence cannot conclusively establish a person’s whereabouts, but the lack of corroboration presents another issue prosecutors must address.

Under Texas Penal Code §19.03(a)(3), capital murder includes employing another person to commit murder for payment or promised payment.

For USA Herald, the central legal question is whether prosecutors can establish that arrangement beyond a reasonable doubt through independently supported evidence rather than assumptions drawn from cash transactions, ambiguous communications, and disputed testimony.

The defense does not have to prove where every dollar went. The prosecution carries the burden of proving Conway’s guilt.

As testimony resumes Monday before Judge Anyiam, USA Herald will continue examining whether the state can establish the alleged financial connection between Conway and White—and whether its witnesses can withstand further scrutiny.
