Destructive storms ripped through central and western Mississippi on Wednesday night, unleashing a severe tornado outbreak that has left a 1-year-old child missing and caused widespread devastation across multiple communities.

Authorities report at least 14 tornadoes touched down, with one already confirmed. The violent weather injured at least 17 people, collapsed hundreds of homes, downed trees, and knocked out power lines. In Tylertown, a home was completely engulfed in flames after being struck by lightning.

Scenes of Chaos and Destruction

In Lincoln County’s Bogue Chitto community, falling trees crushed vehicles and trapped residents in a mobile home park. One survivor, Max Mahaffey, described the terrifying moment to WAPT-TV:

“I was just watching TikTok on my bed and thought it was thunder. I went to my living room. I went back to my room, and the room’s gone.”

Mahaffey escaped unharmed, but his grandmother suffered an ankle injury, and several neighbors sustained cuts and bruises.

The National Weather Service described one of the tornadoes as “very large and dangerous” as it moved from eastern Lincoln County into Lawrence County.

Ongoing Response and Prayers for Mississippi

Governor Tate Reeves confirmed multiple tornadoes struck the state and said the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is leading response and recovery efforts. He posted a simple but powerful message online: “Pray for Mississippi.”

Emergency officials reported major damage and multiple injuries in Lincoln County but, thankfully, no deaths so far. Damage assessments are underway, and residents have been urged to avoid sightseeing so emergency crews can work safely.

A search continues for the missing 1-year-old child.
