27 Years Before Reports of Pastors Being Briefed on UFO Disclosure, French Defense Experts Warned Governments About the Religious Consequences

INSIDE THIS REPORT

  • France’s landmark 1999 COMETA study specifically warned policymakers to prepare for the religious consequences of confirming extraterrestrial intelligence.
  • The report contemplated how unmistakable contact could reshape religious interpretation without necessarily destroying belief in God.
  • Nearly three decades later, claims that American pastors have privately discussed preparation for UAP disclosure earlier this year raise an extraordinary question: Are institutions now preparing for the societal consequences COMETA anticipated in 1999?

By Samuel López | USA Herald

WASHINGTON — Twenty-seven years before American pastors began publicly claiming that religious leaders had been privately approached about preparing congregations for possible UFO disclosure, a remarkable French think-tank had already warned governments that confirmation of extraterrestrial intelligence could carry consequences extending far beyond national security.

It could affect religion itself.

The connection deserves considerably more attention.

In 1999, the French COMETA committee published UFOs and Defense: What Should We Prepare For?, an extensive examination of unexplained aerial phenomena prepared by a highly specialized committee group that included former military officers, aerospace specialists and individuals associated with France’s national-defense establishment.

Buried within that discussion was a warning that now appears strikingly relevant.

COMETA explicitly recommended considering the strategic, political and religious consequences of a possible confirmation of the extraterrestrial hypothesis.

It then devoted an entire chapter to what it called “Political and Religious Implications.”

COMETA Asked What Disclosure Might Do to Faith

The authors reasoned that unmistakable encounters with advanced non-human beings could profoundly change the way populations interpret longstanding religious traditions.

The report contemplated civilizations encountering spacecraft, advanced beings, and other technological manifestations and noted that such phenomena could historically be perceived as divine, supernatural, extraordinary or even diabolical, depending upon the culture experiencing them.

That distinction is important.

COMETA was essentially identifying what today might be described as an interpretive crisis.

If technologically advanced non-human beings appeared openly, humanity would not encounter them in an ideological vacuum. Billions of people would attempt to understand the event through already-existing religious, philosophical and cultural frameworks.

Christians might ask whether such beings were simply additional creations of God.

Others could interpret them as angels, demons or entities described within ancient scripture.

Still others could conclude that historical religious encounters had actually represented interactions with technologically advanced beings.

COMETA itself raised ancient religious and mythological traditions — including Ezekiel, Genesis and Enoch — while examining how unexplained encounters might become incorporated into religious narratives.

Yet the report reached an important conclusion: confirmation of extraterrestrial intelligence would not necessarily eliminate belief in God.

Its authors suggested instead that religious concepts might be reoriented as humanity developed a broader understanding of its place within the cosmos. COMETA additionally observed that major terrestrial religions do not inherently require Earth to be the universe's only inhabited world.

That argument suddenly looks far less theoretical.

Then Came Reports About Pastors

In 2026, several Christian figures publicly discussed claims that pastors had participated in private conversations concerning UFOs, extraterrestrial intelligence or prospective disclosure.

Those accounts have circulated widely enough that mainstream religious publications, NewsNation-related coverage, and influencer podcasters like Tim Pool have addressed them. However, the underlying allegations remain exactly that — claims. USA Herald has not independently established that the U.S. government conducted an official program briefing pastors about confirmed non-human intelligence.

That qualification matters enormously.

But so does the historical parallel.

If policymakers actually believed disclosure involving non-human intelligence were approaching, consulting religious leaders would be entirely consistent with the societal-preparation problem COMETA identified almost three decades ago.

Religion is not peripheral to such an announcement.

It would arguably be one of the first institutions confronted with questions.

Where do these beings fit within creation?

Do they possess souls?

Did revelation occur elsewhere?

Would biblical descriptions of angels or other entities require reinterpretation?

Would extraterrestrial civilizations have religions of their own?

And perhaps most explosively: what happens if information accompanying disclosure challenges humanity's existing understanding of ancient religious history?

Those questions move the UFO issue from aerospace policy into theology.

Indeed, another portion of COMETA contemplated whether a civilization wishing to reveal itself without traumatizing a population might permit what the report called “calculated indiscretions” — gradual indications intended to accustom a society to the possibility of extraterrestrial visitation before unmistakable contact occurred.

That passage may be one of the most provocative in the entire document when viewed from 2026.

Because the modern UAP era has unfolded incrementally.

Military videos became public.

Congressional hearings followed.

Whistleblowers testified.

Government terminology shifted from “UFO” to UAP and eventually incorporated the phrase “non-human intelligence” into legislative debate.

Religious scholars entered the discussion.

And now pastors themselves are publicly discussing reports of conversations about preparing believers for disclosure.

None of those developments proves extraterrestrial visitation.

But together they make COMETA's central question remarkably contemporary:

What should society prepare for if confirmation ever comes?

The Question May No Longer Be Whether Religion Survives

Interestingly, contemporary scholarship suggests religion may prove considerably more adaptable than earlier popular assumptions suggested.

The deeper disruption could instead involve interpretation.

The existence of another civilization would be one revelation.

Learning that such beings had interacted with humanity historically would be something entirely different.

And the suggestion that some phenomena described throughout religious history could have another explanation would represent an even larger theological challenge.

COMETA understood that distinction in 1999.

That may be why its authors did not simply ask whether extraterrestrials exist.

They asked what governments should prepare for if they do.

Twenty-seven years later, amid allegations that religious leaders are themselves being encouraged to think about disclosure, that largely forgotten warning deserves renewed scrutiny.

Because if confirmation of non-human intelligence ever arrives, the first questions humanity asks may not be about propulsion systems, recovered spacecraft or military technology.

Some of the first questions may be considerably older:

Who created them?

Why are they here?

Have they been here before?

And perhaps most consequentially:

What does their existence mean for everything humanity has believed about itself?
