In a groundbreaking move, the U.S. Senate has greenlit Anna Gomez, previously an adviser at the U.S. State Department for telecom and a partner at Wiley Rein LLP, to serve as the fifth member of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This decision marks a monumental change, establishing the FCC's premier Democratic majority since the curtains closed on the Obama administration.

FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, also of the Democratic fold, leads the commission, and Gomez's confirmation fills the last vacant spot in the five-member ensemble.

President Joe Biden, in his quest to revitalize the FCC, had nominated Gomez in May, a seasoned veteran boasting 30 years in telecom law and multiple esteemed government roles. Alongside Gomez, Biden's list also featured Republican FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr and Democrat Geoffrey Starks. However, their confirmation remains pending.

Gomez's introduction into the FCC's fold was lauded by many, heralding her as the fresh voice the commission desperately needed. Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., painted a picture of a rejuvenated FCC under Gomez, empowered to tackle high-speed internet access, introduce consumer-friendly programs, and ward off unnecessary costs.

Breaking the mold, Gomez's confirmation also shone light on her becoming the first Latina commissioner in over two decades.

However, not all welcomed her with open arms. Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, raised concerns about her potential influence in regulating online "disinformation." Cruz also expressed concerns about her role in the revival of net neutrality regulations.

The FCC's Tug of War and the Promise of Progress

Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., provided a counter-narrative, emphasizing how Gomez's inclusion would rectify the previous 2-2 deadlock, steering the FCC towards crucial initiatives.

With a promise to redefine digital connectivity and 5G proliferation, Sen. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., said, "Anna Gomez will be the compass guiding our country into the digital future."

The journey to the Senate floor for Gomez began on July 12, gaining traction with adequate backing, albeit facing some opposition. Gomez did experience pockets of resistance, with some Republicans voicing their apprehensions.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., warned of returning to the stringent regulations of the Obama-era, potentially curbing the growth of e-commerce and slowing rural broadband expansion.

Despite the critiques, Gomez's candidacy received overwhelming support from both sides of the aisle and various industry groups, all hungry for an active commission.

A myriad of roles defines Gomez’s legacy, including her leadership during the digital TV transition and her contributions to the FCC's International Bureau. Yet, the future remains uncertain for Carr and Starks, with no scheduled floor votes in sight.
