Chicago Aldermans Trial Postponed

In a surprising turn of events, an attorney's positive test for COVID-19 has thrown a wrench into the public corruption trial of Chicago alderman Ed Burke. The trial, which had commenced with jury selection earlier this week, promised a gripping legal battle, but now faces an unexpected delay.

Chicago Alderman's Trial Postponed : COVID Curveball

Jury selection, a crucial phase in any trial, had been in full swing in Chicago federal court on Monday. The stage was set for the trial to resume on Thursday morning, with anticipation building for the opening arguments from the defense and prosecution. However, U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall's announcement on Thursday morning shifted the narrative dramatically.

The judge revealed that an attorney involved in the case had tested positive for COVID-19, prompting her to send jurors home and postpone further proceedings. The trial, initially poised for a continuous flow of legal exchanges, is now slated to resume on November 16, injecting an element of uncertainty and suspense into the already high-stakes trial.

A Legal Saga Unfolds

The trial, expected to unfold over eight weeks, revolves around serious allegations against Ed Burke, a once-powerful figure in Chicago's political landscape. Burke, who served on the City Council for decades, faces charges of racketeering, attempted extortion, and bribery.

As the former chairman of the City Council's Finance Committee, Burke is accused of leveraging his influential position to solicit and receive bribes from real estate developers between 2016 and 2018. The alleged scheme involved seeking legal fees for his law firm, Klafter & Burke, from entities conducting business before the city or his committee, according to prosecutors.

The Players and the Charges

Burke's legal troubles began with an extortion charge in early 2019, but a grand jury later indicted him on 14 counts, roping in co-defendants Charles Cui and Peter Andrews. Cui, a real estate developer and attorney, is accused of bribing Burke for assistance with a sign permit, while Andrews, a ward office worker, is alleged to have aided Burke in extorting a fast-food restaurant owner.

All three defendants have maintained their innocence, pleading not guilty to the charges.

Chicago Alderman's Trial Postponed : Legal Lineup

The legal battlefield is marked by a formidable lineup. The government is represented by a team from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois, including Amarjeet Bhachu, Diane MacArthur, Sarah Streicker, Julia Schwartz, Kurt Siegal, Michelle Kramer, Sushma Raju, and Timothy Chapman.

Ed Burke's defense is led by Charles Sklarsky, Anton Valukas, and Kimberly Rhum of Jenner & Block LLP, along with Chris Gair and Blake Edwards of Gair Gallo Eberhard LLP, and Joseph Duffy, Andrew DeVooght, and Robin Waters of Loeb & Loeb LLP.

Peter Andrews is represented by Patrick Blegen and Gabrielle Foley of Blegen & Garvey, Todd Pugh and Chelsy Van Overmeiren of Breen & Pugh, and Leland Shalgos.

Charles Cui has legal representation from Tinos Diamantatos, William Peterson, and Megan Braden of Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP.

In a legal drama with twists and turns, the unexpected delay adds another layer of complexity to the unfolding trial, leaving both legal enthusiasts and the public on the edge of their seats.
