The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said in a post on Telegram that Russia hacked into surveillance cameras to coordinate Tuesday’s massive missile attack on Kyiv. 

The breach involved gaining control of online cameras on residential buildings, allowing Russian intelligence to spy on Ukraine's Defense Forces and strategically plan its strikes. This marks a disturbing escalation in Russia's aggressive actions against Ukraine.

Russia Hacked to Coordinate Attack

The Security Service of Ukraine, in a post on Telegram, detailed how Russian intelligence gained control of two online surveillance cameras in Kyiv. 

These cameras were reportedly used to spy on air defense systems and gather information about the city's critical infrastructure before launching the devastating attack on Tuesday. The breach reveals a calculated effort by Russia to overcome Ukraine's defenses through a combination of drones, airstrikes, and a massive missile barrage.

The onslaught on Kyiv and the eastern city of Kharkiv involved nearly 100 missiles. It was the most intense air attack by Russia on Ukraine since the invasion in 2020.

 The attacks resulted in the tragic loss of four lives and left around 70 people injured. The indiscriminate targeting of critical infrastructure, including energy systems, reflects the severity of Russia's ongoing campaign against Ukraine.

Surveillance Camera Manipulation

The hacked cameras played a pivotal role in Russia's strategy. One camera, located on the balcony of an apartment building, was adjusted by Russia to monitor the local area. Another, situated in a residential complex, typically used for monitoring a car park, was also compromised. 

Russia altered the camera's angle on the balcony and connected it to YouTube, gaining real-time visual information crucial for planning the attack.

In response to this breach, the SBU has taken swift action, blocking the operation of approximately 10,000 IP cameras that could have been exploited by Russia to coordinate missile attacks. 

The security services are now urging Ukrainians who own webcams to cease online broadcasts from their devices. Additionally, they have called on the public to report any suspicious streams to the SBU's official chatbot. And to stop online broadcasts from their devices.
