A Transatlantic Murder Plot

 Disguised in a hijab, the American tourist attempted the kill-for-hire contract twice but failed both times. After her failed attempts, prosecutors say Betro flew back to the US and has since vanished.

Betro, who has not been implicated in any other crimes, appears to have undertaken her first job as a professional hitwoman. There is no evidence suggesting she was living a secret double life as an assassin.

Her social media profiles depict her as a freelance graphic designer with a background in early childhood education from Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin. After graduating in 2005, she worked as an administrator for the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team.

Nazir and Aslam Found Guilty

Last month, Nazir and Aslam, from Derby, were found guilty of conspiracy to murder for their involvement in the attempted killing.

 The UK court heard that the father and son duo harbored a grudge against Ali's family following a violent dispute at his boutique clothing store in Birmingham, central England. The altercation had left Nazir and Aslam injured, with their shop windows smashed and the interior "trashed."

Seeking revenge, the pair allegedly arranged for Betro to fly from the United States to Birmingham to kill Ali and his family. The plot's details, as revealed in court, painted a picture of deep-seated animosity and a meticulously planned vendetta.

 Hitwoman Holiday

Betro's first attempt to carry out the revenge killing against Aslat Mahamud and his relatives occurred after a 2018 dispute at a jewelry store had left Nazir and Aslam injured.

 Approaching Ali with a gun, Betro pointed it at his head, but the weapon jammed, allowing Ali to flee.

Undeterred, Betro allegedly went to Mahamud's house the next morning and fired three shots before sending taunting texts to Mahamud: “Stop playing hide and seek” and “Where are you hiding?” Fortunately, no one was injured.

 She continued her harassment with another message to Mahamud, saying: “You want to rip me off, you want to be a drug kingpin, go look at your house. I will show you. Watch your back. I will be shedding blood soon.”

Documenting Her Trip on Instagram

Betro's social media activity, as reported by The Times, showed that she meticulously documented her trip to the UK from August to September 2019.

 In one Instagram post, she mentioned visiting her “partner in crime” in Manchester. Another post, from the day before the first attempted shooting, showed Betro posing with devil horns. 

Additional posts described her attendance at the Tranzmission Festival in Crystal Palace, London, and a boat tour of the River Thames.

Throughout her stay in the UK, Betro lodged at various hotels in Birmingham, Brighton, Derby, and Manchester, including a stay at a Radisson Blue hotel, according to court testimonies.

Revenge Gone Wrong

Detective Inspector Matt Marston from West Midlands Police highlighted the lengths Nazir and Aslam went to in ensuring they weren't directly implicated in the attempted murder.

 "The lengths they went to in trying to make sure they weren’t implicated in pulling the trigger are immense," Marston noted. "However, thanks to some great police work and support from our Derbyshire colleagues, we were able to place them firmly in the middle of the attempted murder plot."
