Kennedy Center Honors

Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, rock band members of the Grateful Dead, and singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt are among those recognized for Kennedy Center Honors.

The honorees were announced by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for their significant achievements and contributions to the arts. This is an acknowledgement of the impact these artists have had on American culture and their enduring legacies.

The 47th annual Kennedy Center Honors will air on December 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and will also be available for streaming on Paramount+ for premium subscribers.

In a historic first, the Kennedy Center is also honoring an institution this year: the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. This special declaration comes as the iconic venue, which has been a champion of Black talent, celebrates its 90th anniversary.

The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead, an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California, is renowned for its eclectic style, which fuses elements of rock, blues, jazz, folk, country, bluegrass, rock and roll, gospel, reggae, and world music with psychedelia.

The band's lineup included Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bobby Weir. Their devoted fan base, known as Deadheads.

Deadheads," played a crucial role in their success and legacy.

"The Grateful Dead has always been about community, creativity, and exploration in music and presentation. We've always felt that the music we make embodies and imparts something beyond the notes and phrases being played — and that is something we are privileged to share with all who are drawn to what we do — so it also must be said that our music belongs as much to our fans, the Deadheads, as it does to us. This honor, then, is as much theirs as ours," the band said in a press release.

Bonnie Raitt

Bonnie Raitt, celebrated for her Americana music style, has been a significant figure in the music industry for decades. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, the 74-year-old slide guitar player released her first self-titled album, "Bonnie Raitt," in 1971. Since then, she has released 17 award-winning albums, her most recent one in 2022.

Raitt often shares her journey to sobriety, which she achieved in 1986, crediting Dallas musician Stevie Ray Vaughan for sponsoring her sobriety.

Reflecting on the Kennedy Center Honor, Raitt said, "There is no higher level of esteem nor as delightful a celebration, and I want to extend my sincere thanks to all who have chosen me to receive this honor."

Francis Ford Coppola

Francis Ford Coppola, the 85-year-old film director, producer, and screenwriter, is best known for his work on "The Godfather" films. Over his illustrious career, Coppola has received numerous accolades, including five Academy Awards and six Golden Globes.

"I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to collaborate with great artists and wonderful people throughout my career, and I have never stopped learning. There is no greater honor than to be included along with those who inspired me, who I looked up to, and who gave me encouragement when times were dim," Coppola stated.

Cultural Impact of Kennedy Center Honors

According to Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter, "Our Honorees this year have each played an invaluable, pioneering role in developing American culture — not with one act of art but with their decades-long devotion to pushing creative boundaries."

The Kennedy Center Honors continue to celebrate individuals and institutions that have profoundly influenced American arts and culture.

Last year's honorees included singer Dionne Warwick; actor and comedian Billy Crystal; actress, singer, and rapper Queen Latifah; soprano Renée Fleming; and singer-songwriter Barry Gibb. This year’s honorees, with their remarkable contributions, further enrich the tapestry of American artistry.
