Harris Secures Delegates

According to The Associated Press, Kamala Harris crossed the threshold of the required 1,976 delegates, gathering 2,688 just over a day after declaring her candidacy. 

Harris claimed early Tuesday morning that she had secured enough support from DNC delegates to become the party’s presidential nominee. This development followed President Joe Biden's decision to step down from the race and endorse Harris.

BLM's Response and Concerns

In response to this sudden shift in the Democratic primary landscape, BLM issued a statement expressing its dissatisfaction with the DNC’s approach. 

The statement emphasized that, while President Biden was not their top choice as a candidate, the actions of the Democratic Party raise serious concerns. They pointed out that a new primary election was not held after Biden's withdrawal, which, according to BLM, undermines democratic principles.

“We call for the Rules Committee to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates,” the statement reads.

 “The current political landscape is unprecedented, with President Biden stepping aside in a manner never seen before. This moment calls for decisive action to protect the integrity of our democracy and the voices of Black voters.”

Black Lives Matter Demands Transparency

Vice President Harris stated on Sunday her intention to “earn and secure” the Democratic presidential nomination following Biden’s announcement that he will not seek re-election as the party’s nominee. 

However, Black Lives Matter argues that the Democratic Party's elites and billionaire donors are manipulating Black voters by anointing Harris and an unknown vice president without a primary vote by the public.

“This blatant disregard for democratic principles is unacceptable,” BLM continued. “While the potential outcome of a Harris presidency may be historic, the process to achieve it must align with true democratic values. We have no idea where Kamala Harris stands on the issues, now that she has assumed Joe Biden’s place, and we have no idea of the record of her potential vice president because we don’t even know who it is yet.”

BLM’s concerns reflect a broader demand for transparency and inclusivity in the nomination process. 

Shalomyah Browers, a BLM leader, emphasized that the issue is not an attack on Kamala Harris or Black women. Instead, the focus is on ensuring a democratic nominating process that respects the voices of all voters.

“This is not an attack on Kamala Harris or Black women, and right now we aren’t questioning Kamala’s qualifications or capabilities. This is about the nominating process,” Browers stated.

President Biden’s Decision

President Biden, in a letter following his withdrawal announcement, explained that his decision to step aside was in the interests of his party and the nation. He expressed a desire to concentrate fully on fulfilling his responsibilities as President. 

Before his decision, Biden faced numerous calls from prominent Democrats, including many in Congress, to drop out of the race.

The call from BLM for a nationwide primary reflects the growing demand for a more inclusive and transparent process within the Democratic Party. 

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the party's response to these concerns will play a crucial role in shaping its future direction and ensuring that the voices of all constituents are heard.
