Global IT Outage

A global IT outage linked to a software update from the popular cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has created widespread chaos.

This incident has affected computers running Microsoft Windows across various sectors, including airlines, banks, retailers, brokerage houses, media companies, and railway networks. Among these, the travel sector appears to be one of the hardest hit, leading to significant disruptions worldwide.

CrowdStrike’s Response

CrowdStrike’s chief executive, George Kurtz, confirmed the issue in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that a "defect" in a content update for Windows hosts had caused the outage.

Kurtz emphasized that this was not a result of a cyberattack but a software defect. He assured that the firm was rolling out a fix and clarified that Mac and Linux hosts were not affected.

“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted,” Kurtz noted on X.

“This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed. We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website. We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels. Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers,” Kurtz said.

Microsoft’s Involvement

Later that Friday, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) stated that while the outage wasn’t linked to any suspicious activity, it had observed threat actors taking advantage of the incident for phishing and other malicious activities.

Microsoft began noticing problems in the early hours of July 19. The Service Health page for Microsoft 365 indicated that services for consumers were restored, but enterprise applications were still experiencing disruptions.

“We’re aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software platform. We anticipate a resolution is forthcoming,” a Microsoft spokesperson told TechCrunch in a statement.

The spokesperson added that the previous Microsoft 365 service disruption overnight July 18 to 19 was unrelated to the widespread outage triggered by the CrowdStrike update.

Global Impacts of the IT Outage

The effects of the global IT outage have been extensive and severe.

Airlines and airports across Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, China, Japan, India, Singapore, and Taiwan reported problems with check-in and ticketing systems. This led to flight delays and considerable chaos at airports. In the U.S., federal airspace officials announced a nationwide ground stop of air traffic due to the outages, which experts said might impact the climate.

In the U.K., the London Stock Exchange faced disruptions, and several doctors' offices reported that the outage affected the National Health Service’s clinical computer system, which contains medical records and is used for scheduling appointments.

In the U.S., some 911 and non-emergency call centers were also affected. Alaska State Troopers noted that many such call centers were "not working correctly across the State of Alaska."

Media outlets were not spared either. U.K. news broadcaster Sky News experienced trouble broadcasting live due to the outage, as tweeted by the firm's executive chairman David Rhodes. The New Zealand Herald reported that banking services in the country were affected, and several Indian news channels also faced broadcasting problems.

Additionally, many employees from various companies reported being unable to start their computers due to the issue.

The outage followed shortly after Microsoft confirmed service problems with its Microsoft 365 apps late on Thursday, which had already affected several airlines, including Delta and United. According to Microsoft’s services status page, the issues were in the process of being resolved.

Who is CrowdStrike?

According to its website CrowdStrike serves nearly 60% of Fortune 500 companies and more than half of the Fortune 1,000. Its services are deployed by eight of the top 10 financial services firms and an equal number of leading tech companies.

It also has a strong presence in the healthcare and manufacturing sectors, serving six and seven of the top 10 companies in those industries, respectively.

As a result of the outage, CrowdStrike’s shares were down around 11% when the market closed on Friday, with a market cap of $74.2 billion at the time of this writing.

This incident underscores the critical nature of cybersecurity products, and customer service protocols to maintain trust and reliability in an increasingly digital world.
