died by suicide

Nearly three decades after 15-year-old Danielle "Danni" Houchins was found dead near a fishing access site in Montana, authorities have finally identified her killer as Paul Hutchinson. The breakthrough came as a result of advances in DNA technology and forensic genetic genealogy. Hutchinson, a married father of two, died by suicide shortly after being interviewed by investigators.

The Case That Went Cold

On September 21, 1996, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Houchins left her home in Belgrade, Montana. She was never seen again.

When her family reported her missing, an extensive search ensued. Later that day, her mother discovered Houchins' truck abandoned at a popular fishing access site on the Gallatin River.

The search led to the discovery of Houchins' body, face down in shallow water. Despite the collection of DNA evidence and numerous interviews, no arrests were made, and the case eventually went cold.

Breakthroughs in DNA

The case was revived in 2021 when Dan Springer became the Gallatin County Sheriff. Determined to solve the cold case, he enlisted the help of two experts from California:

Private investigator Tom Elfmont, a retired Los Angeles Police Department officer, and Sergeant Court Depweg, an expert in using DNA technology to solve homicides joined the team.

Their efforts focused on four hairs found on Houchins' body, which were used to create a partial DNA profile. This profile was sent to a lab in Virginia, where genealogists used DNA databases to identify Hutchinson as a possible suspect.

Died by Suicide

On July 23, 2024, Elfmont and Depweg interviewed Hutchinson, who lived about 100 miles from the crime scene in Dillon, Montana.

The sheriff's office reported that during the nearly two-hour interview, Hutchinson, who had lived in Bozeman at the time of Houchins' death, displayed extreme nervousness.

Investigators noted that he sweated profusely, scratched his face, and chewed on his hand. When shown a photo of Houchins, Hutchinson slumped in his chair and exhibited signs of discomfort. His behavior became very erratic.

The following morning, Hutchinson called the Beaverhead County Sheriff's Office, stating that he needed assistance before abruptly hanging up. He was found on the side of the road, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A Crime of Opportunity

Investigators have determined that Houchins and Hutchinson did not know each other, describing the murder as a "crime of opportunity."

They believe that Hutchinson, who was a student at Montana State University at the time, randomly encountered Houchins before raping her and suffocating her in shallow water.

This brutal crime shattered the lives of Houchins' family and left a community searching for answers for nearly three decades.

Justice and Closure

Sheriff Springer emphasized the importance of never giving up on the pursuit of justice. "This case exemplifies our relentless pursuit of justice. We never gave up on finding the truth for Danni and her family, exhausting all means necessary to bring closure to this heartbreaking chapter," Springer said.

Houchins' younger sister, Stephanie Mollet, also spoke at a news conference, expressing the family's relief that the case had been solved, despite the fact that Hutchinson will never face trial.

"Even though this man will not face a jury of his peers, I have no doubt he was the one who forcefully and violently sexually assaulted my sister, then held her head down in a marsh until she choked to death on mud," Mollet said. "When the time came to face up and account for his violence, he instead chose to end his life. He knew of his guilt and couldn't face my family or his family and the pain he caused."

The resolution of Houchins' murder case brings a bittersweet sense of closure to her family and the community.

The identification of Hutchinson as her killer, aided by advancements in DNA technology, underscores the importance of persistence in seeking justice for victims.

This announcement comes just days after another cold case in Hawaii was solved through DNA testing, where the suspect also died by suicide before he could be arrested.
