Organizers of three Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna canceled the events. Officials revealed that terrorists were planning a major attack. Two plotters were arrested.

The concerts were set to take place at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday as part of Swift's highly anticipated Eras Tour.

The Vienna stadium events had been sold out, with an estimated 170,000 fans expected to attend. 

Many fans took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their disappointment after months of preparation, which included crafting friendship bracelets and selecting fashionable outfits for the event.

Taylor Swift Concerts Forced Cancellation

Event organizer Barracuda Music made the announcement on Instagram late Wednesday that “we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.” This decision was based on government officials' confirmation of a planned attack at the stadium.

Austrian authorities disclosed on Thursday that both suspects in the foiled plot appeared to be inspired by the Islamic State group and al-Qaida.

 Investigators found bomb-making materials at one of the suspect's homes. One of the two confessed to planning to “kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue.”

Disappointment and Financial Losses

The cancellation of the three sold-out concerts left fans devastated, many of whom had invested thousands of euros in travel and lodging in Austria’s capital city to attend the Eras Tour shows. 

The Ernst Happel Stadium, expected to hold up to 65,000 fans at each concert and as many as 30,000 onlookers outside. The venue remained empty on Thursday morning, except for media filming street-views.

Concert organizers firmly stood by their decision to cancel all three events, citing concerns over public safety and the potential for mass casualties.

Details of the Terror Plot

According to Austria’s interior minister, Gerhard Karner, the foiled attack was planned for Thursday or Friday. 

Officials reported that the 19-year-old Austrian suspect began formulating his attack plans in July. He had uploaded an oath of allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State group militia just weeks before the planned attack. His intention was to use knives or homemade explosives on the exterior of the stadium.

Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, stated that the suspect was “clearly radicalized in the direction of the Islamic State and thinks it is right to kill infidels.”

Investigation 

During a raid of the suspect's home in Ternitz, south of Vienna, investigators found chemical substances and technical devices indicating “concrete preparatory acts,” as described by Franz Ruf, Director General for Public Security at the Ministry of the Interior.

Authorities also discovered Islamic State and al-Qaida materials at the home of a second suspect, a 17-year-old Austrian. 

This suspect was employed just days prior by a company providing services at the concert venue and was arrested near the stadium by special police forces.

The names of the suspects have not been released due to Austrian privacy regulations. There was also a 15-year-old who had been in contact with both suspects was also interrogated by police.

Reactions

The incident sent shockwaves through the country and beyond. Austria's Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler wrote on social platform X, “For many, a dream has been shattered today. On three evenings in Vienna, tens of thousands of #Swifties should have celebrated life together.”

“I am very sorry that you were denied this. Swifties stick together; hate and terror can’t destroy that,” Kogler added.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer posted on X that “the cancellation of the Taylor Swift concerts by the organizers is a bitter disappointment for all fans in Austria.” 

He emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that “the situation surrounding the apparently planned terror attack in Vienna was very serious.” 

He commended the cooperation between police and Austrian and foreign intelligence, which allowed for the early recognition and tackling of the threat, preventing a tragedy.

Despite this setback, Taylor Swift is expected to continue her tour, with performances scheduled at London’s Wembley Stadium from August 15 to 20 to close the European leg of her record-setting Eras Tour.
