Authorities in Texas have arrested 40 individuals involved in a large-scale, intricate fraud operation that resulted in the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars. According to the Mont Belvieu Police Department, this elaborate scheme was orchestrated through the dark web, where financial data was obtained to carry out the crimes.

“The scheme involved suspects who obtained victims’ stolen financial data then used various online messaging apps to recruit other lower-level individual participants who allowed their legitimate bank accounts to be used to funnel stolen funds through,” said Mont Belvieu Police Chief Jimmy Ellison in a police statement.

The investigation has revealed that 35 residents across Mont Belvieu, Baytown, Chambers County, Houston, and Liberty County fell victim to the fraud.
