Authorities in Texas have arrested 40 individuals involved in a large-scale, intricate fraud operation that resulted in the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars. According to the Mont Belvieu Police Department, this elaborate scheme was orchestrated through the dark web, where financial data was obtained to carry out the crimes.

Complex Dark Web Scheme

"The scheme involved suspects who obtained victims' stolen financial data then used various online messaging apps to recruit other lower-level individual participants who allowed their legitimate bank accounts to be used to funnel stolen funds through," said Mont Belvieu Police Chief Jimmy Ellison in a police statement.

The investigation has revealed that 35 residents across Mont Belvieu, Baytown, Chambers County, Houston, and Liberty County fell victim to the fraud.

Over $360,000, was reported stolen, with authorities estimating that the total could reach as high as $600,000.

The investigation, started in June, and has already led to the arrests of 40 individuals. 

Local news outlet ABC13 reported that many of the suspects were based in Houston, but some were located as far away as Georgia and Illinois. Law enforcement conducted search warrants at two residences in McNair and Baytown, east of Houston.

Search Warrants and Arrests

The police have identified Gregory Edwards III, 23, Doc Frank, 25, Jayson Gipson, 20, and Lajewel McGilbray, 21, as the primary orchestrators of the operation.

Edwards, Gipson, and McGilbray face charges of computer security breaches, while all four have been charged with money laundering and participation in organized crime.

Additional suspects, many of whom were friends and family of the plan’s architects were detained for allowing stolen money to be funneled through their bank accounts. The money laundering was an attempt to avoid detection.

"After acquiring the financial data, they initiate wire transfers from the victims' accounts. To avoid detection, they need to move the money into untraceable accounts, and that's where they started recruiting others," Chief Ellison told ABC13. "Criminals have all the time they need to figure out how to steal your information," he added.

When the search warrants were exercised police recovered over $10,000 in cash linked to the scheme, along with various illegal drugs and controlled substances found in the defendants' possession. Arrests were made the same day. 

Victims of this scheme were reportedly unaware that their financial information had been compromised until they noticed money missing from their accounts. 

Chief Ellison warned in his statement that "crimes like these are becoming far too common and growing more complex."
