A powerful surge of investor interest is electrifying the nuclear sector as X-Energy raises $1.02B IPO, marking a record-breaking debut fueled by the twin forces of artificial intelligence demand and global electrification.

Shares of X-energy began trading Friday, opening at $30.11 after the company priced its offering at $23 per share—well above its initial target range of $16 to $19.

By the closing bell, the stock settled at $29.20, up 27%, capping off a debut that signals renewed confidence in next-generation nuclear technology.

Record-Setting Offering in Nuclear Industry

The company raised more than $1 billion in its initial public offering, making it the largest nuclear IPO on record.

The strong debut comes as energy demands soar, driven by data centers, AI systems, and the broader push toward electrification—turning nuclear power into a sought-after solution once again.

XE-100 Reactor at the Core of Growth Strategy

At the heart of X-energy’s ambitions is its XE-100 reactor, an 80-megawatt high-temperature gas-cooled design.

Unlike traditional systems, the XE-100 can be deployed in clusters, scaling output up to 960 megawatts. Its high heat output also allows it to power industrial processes such as chemical production—areas that are notoriously difficult to decarbonize.

Currently, all operating nuclear plants in the United States rely on light-water reactors, making X-energy’s design a notable departure from the status quo.

Strong Pipeline Despite No Active Plants

While the company has not yet begun building its reactor facilities, it has already secured an order pipeline exceeding 11 gigawatts.

That demand is backed by partnerships with major corporations including Amazon, Dow, and Centrica.

Backing From Major Investors and Government Support

Before going public, X-energy raised over $1.4 billion in private funding, including a $700 million Series D round in November.

Its investors include Amazon, Jane Street, ARK Invest, Ken Griffin, and Ares Management funds. The company has also received financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Choosing IPO Over SPAC Route

X-energy stands apart from competitors like Oklo and NuScale, which went public through SPAC deals.

The company had previously explored a SPAC merger but abandoned the plan in 2023, opting instead for a traditional IPO route.

Licensing Model Sets Company Apart

Unlike some rivals, X-energy does not plan to own or operate nuclear plants.

Instead, it will license its reactor technology while also producing and selling nuclear fuel from its fabrication facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where construction began in 2025.

Regulatory Path and Future Projects

In March 2025, X-energy and Dow submitted a construction permit application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a proposed project in Seadrift, Texas.

The review process is expected to take about 18 months and is part of a two-step approval system that also includes an operating license.

Long-Term Vision With Major Partners

X-energy is also collaborating with Amazon to deploy 5 gigawatts of nuclear capacity across the United States by 2039.

The first planned project is a 320-megawatt facility in partnership with Energy Northwest in Washington state.
