The Melania Jimmy Kimmel widow joke has ignited a political firestorm following a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with the first lady condemning the late-night host’s remarks as “hateful and violent” in the days surrounding the attack.

Melania Trump sharply criticized comedian and television host Jimmy Kimmel over a joke delivered during a monologue ahead of the annual event, where she appeared alongside former President Donald Trump.

Controversial joke resurfaces after shooting

During a Thursday broadcast parodying the upcoming dinner, Kimmel referred to Melania Trump as having “a glow like an expectant widow,” a remark that initially aired without widespread attention. However, the comment resurfaced with renewed intensity after a gunman opened fire at Saturday’s event.

Authorities say the attack may have been aimed at members of the Trump administration. The timing of the joke, just days before the incident, amplified criticism, with opponents drawing a direct line between rhetoric and real-world violence.

Melania Trump calls for action against ABC

In a post shared on X, Melania Trump condemned the statement, arguing that voices like Kimmel’s should not be given a platform.

“People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate,” she wrote, urging ABC to “take a stand.”

She added that the monologue “isn’t comedy,” describing the language as corrosive and warning that it deepens political division across the country. The first lady questioned how long network leadership would tolerate what she called “atrocious behavior.”

Trump and officials join criticism

Donald Trump echoed the outrage in a post on Truth Social, stating that many Americans were “incensed” by the remarks and characterizing them as a “call to violence.” He called for immediate action against Kimmel, urging The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, to remove the host from the air.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also criticized the comments during a Monday news conference, calling such rhetoric “completely deranged” when directed at the president, first lady, and their supporters.

Shooting heightens scrutiny of rhetoric

The controversy intensified after the shooting at the Washington Hilton, where a suspect identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen allegedly opened fire near a security checkpoint. He was quickly subdued by agents before reaching the ballroom, where hundreds of journalists, officials, and public figures were gathered.

Both Donald and Melania Trump were evacuated safely. The former president later described the incident as “a rather traumatic experience” for his wife.

The suspect is expected to appear in court, as investigators continue examining possible motives behind the attack.

Past controversies add context

Kimmel has faced criticism before over politically charged remarks. In September, he was temporarily taken off air after comments related to the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk sparked backlash. His show returned a week later, with the host acknowledging that his words may have been poorly timed or unclear.

In the latest episode, critics across social media have renewed calls for accountability, arguing that repeated controversies point to a pattern. Supporters, however, have defended the role of satire in political commentary, highlighting the long-standing tension between comedy and public discourse.
