US Borrowing Costs Hits 5% as Middle East War Ignites Global Bond Selloff

US Borrowing Costs Hits 5%

Numbers on a bond yield chart rarely feel dramatic — until they cross a line everyone's been watching. That line got crossed Monday, as US government borrowing costs climbed to 5% for the first time since 2023, driven by soaring oil prices tied to the escalating war in the Middle East and an intensifying selloff sweeping through global bond markets.

The Moment It Happened

The yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds — essentially the interest rate the government pays to borrow — hit that psychologically loaded 5% threshold on Monday, coinciding with a fresh wave of selling pressure on Wall Street as global oil prices climbed to $108 a barrel. The benchmark rate had been climbing steadily all year, rising from a low of 4% before the US-Israeli war with Iran broke out in late February. The last time yields sat above 5% was back in October 2023 — meaning markets are now revisiting territory they haven't seen in roughly two years.

Oil Prices Light the Fuse

Behind this surge sits a familiar culprit: rising global oil prices stoking inflation fears. The latest spike traces back to a series of drone attacks that forced Saudi Arabia to shut down a critical east-west crude pipeline, adding fresh fuel to an already destabilized region. Brent crude, the international benchmark, surged past $108.5 a barrel Monday — a 3.7% jump in a single day, the kind of move that tends to ripple far beyond energy trading desks alone.

A Strategic Waterway Falls Under New Control

The spike followed a dramatic escalation over the weekend: Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi forces launched multiple attacks against Saudi Arabia and seized the strategic island of Perim in the Bab al-Mandab strait on Sunday, tightening their grip over one of the world's most vital shipping corridors.

Diplomacy Stalls as Prices Climb

Adding to the pressure, Gulf states postponed a planned meeting with Tehran that was meant to discuss creating a temporary shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz — a channel through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil and gas supply typically flows. Traders in Saudi Arabia have warned the kingdom could run out of oil stocks for export entirely if the closed pipeline doesn't reopen within days, turning a regional conflict into a countdown clock for global energy markets.

Gas Prices Join the Climb

The pain wasn't confined to oil. Gas prices also surged Monday, with the UK benchmark jumping 5% to 208.73p a therm — its highest level since December 2022, underscoring just how widely this energy shock is spreading across different fuel markets simultaneously.

A Fragile Diplomatic Bright Spot

Amid the chaos, there was at least one flicker of calm: Donald Trump announced Monday that Ukraine and Russia had agreed not to target each other's energy infrastructure. Trump also insisted that a politically sensitive rise in US diesel fuel prices was being driven more by the European conflict than by the war in Iran — though markets seemed largely unmoved by the distinction.

Bond Markets Feel the Global Squeeze

Because the US 10-year Treasury yield functions as a benchmark for pricing assets across global financial markets, a jump in Washington's borrowing costs doesn't stay contained within American borders — it ripples outward to affect countries, businesses and households worldwide. Borrowing costs rose across Europe on Monday as well, including a jump in 30-year UK government yields to their highest level since March 1998.

All Eyes on Central Banks This Week

These moves come as traders brace for interest rate decisions from the US Federal Reserve on Wednesday and the Bank of England on Thursday, following the European Central Bank's decision last week to raise borrowing costs. With markets anticipating a Fed rate hike and a hold decision from Threadneedle Street amid mounting inflationary pressure, analysts warn global bond markets could face yet another volatile week ahead.

Analysts Sound the Alarm

Daniela Hathorn, a senior market analyst at Capital.com, described the mood succinctly: "Markets are starting the week on a defensive footing, with the combination of another escalation in the Middle East and increasingly hawkish central-bank expectations weighing on risk appetite."

Pain at the Pump Follows Pain in the Markets

As wholesale energy prices climb, the cost of fueling up has followed suit. According to the RAC, the average cost of petrol reached 169.68p on Monday, with diesel climbing to 191.68p — both fresh highs since the Iran war began.

A Year of Oil Price Whiplash

This latest surge is just the newest chapter in a volatile year for oil markets. The US-Israeli war with Iran has disrupted supply across the Middle East throughout 2026, sending prices soaring from a prewar level of about $72 a barrel to a peak of $126 in April. Brent crude later retreated over the summer amid hopes for a lasting ceasefire, before climbing again once the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran collapsed. Following a recent escalation in hostilities, the benchmark rose back above $100 a barrel last week for the first time since July.

A Warning of Worse to Come

Chris Beauchamp of broker IG suggested a "move back to the spring highs" looks increasingly likely. "Oil markets are being subjected to their worst fears all at once – attacks on energy infrastructure, the closure of Hormuz and a breakdown in attempts to restart negotiations," he said. He warned that the risk of disruption is spreading beyond the Gulf entirely, with renewed Houthi attacks on shipping adding yet another layer of uncertainty to already strained energy and trade routes.

"The major surprise is how calm markets remain in the face of all this," Beauchamp added, "but if prices breach the March highs, things could get ugly very quickly."

Supply Troubles Predate the Attacks

Notably, Saudi Arabia's oil output had already been under strain before the pipeline attacks began. Riyadh reportedly told the OPEC oil cartel recently that its crude production in August had fallen to its lowest level since 1990, according to Bloomberg — suggesting the kingdom was already running lean even before this latest crisis hit.

Taken together, the convergence of war, collapsing diplomacy and surging energy prices has pushed global markets into territory that feels less like a routine fluctuation and more like a slow-building storm — one that traders, central bankers and everyday drivers alike are all watching with growing unease.
