Adams Distanced, Allies Defiant
Mayor Adams has not been implicated in the case. The indictments are before New York Supreme Court Justice Daniel Conviser, who ordered all defendants released without custody as arraignments began.
Defense attorneys struck back. Lewis-Martin’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, called the case a “rush to judgment,” insisting she has “always served the city with integrity.” Attorneys for the Argentos branded the charges “baseless,” while Hamilton’s counsel hinted he may resign from his post as deputy commissioner for city real estate services.
Prosecutors, however, were blunt. “Ms. Lewis-Martin was open for business. She betrayed the public trust in favor of a select few,” assistant DA Guy Tardanico told the court.
What Comes Next
All defendants entered not guilty pleas. No trial date has been set, and the DA’s office signaled more charges could follow as the corruption probe widens.
The courtroom drama leaves Adams’ inner circle shaken, his former right hand now cast as a central figure in what could become one of New York’s most explosive bribery scandals in years.
