Amelia Earhart’s plane

Deep Sea Vision announced it may have found Amelia Earhart’s plane. This would solve an 86-year-old mystery.

The company has sonar images in the Pacific Ocean that "appears to be Earhart's Lockheed 10-E Electra" aircraft.

The company hunting for Earhart's airplane announced the discovery on social media. They claim its 16-person crew "scanned more than 5,200 square miles of ocean floor." before finding what they believe to be the legendary aviator’s Lockheed 10-E Electra.

Amelia Earhart’s Plane

She was flying her Lockheed Electra 10 airplane which she named the "Flying Laboratory."

The aircraft was outfitted for long-distance flights. It had state-of-the-art technology for the time. This included radio-telephone systems, navigational equipment and de-icers for the plane wings.

Earhart, along with navigator Fred Noonan, disappeared in 1937.  Her last flight was an attempt to be the first pilot to complete a flight along the earth’s equator.

The plane lost contact approximately 100 miles from Howland Island. They were scheduled land there and to refuel on July 2, 1937. Instead, they disappeared.

Researchers have always believed that the pair crashed somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

In the years since she vanished numerous expeditions have been sent out looking for the plane and the human remains of its occupants.

 Who was Amelia Earhart?

Born in Kansas on July 24, 1897, Amelia Earhart was a high-profile celebrity in the 1930’s. She set a number of flying records.

The American aviator was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She was the first to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. She also set speed and altitude records.

When she vanished, she was attempting to be the first person to fly around the world at the equator, setting a record for the furthest-distance flight.

She also founded and served as president of the Ninety-Nines. The first organization for female pilots.

She was also an author, a lecturer, and an early advocate for women’s rights.

Deep Sea Vision

Deep Sea Vision used the Kongsberg Discovery HUGIN 6000, a state-of-the-art drone which "captured a fuzzy sonar image of an object the size and shape of an airplane resting some 5,000 meters underwater within 100 miles of Howland Island."

Tony Romeo, Deep Sea Vision's CEO remains "optimistic" that the discovery is Earhart's pland.

“This is maybe the most exciting thing I’ll ever do in my life,” Romeo reported. “I feel like a 10-year-old going on a treasure hunt.”

More evidence is needed to prove this is Earhart's plane. Deep Sea discovered the image in the drone's data about 90 days into the trip. And it was too late to turn back to investigate further.

According to the Post, Deep Sea plans to launch another expedition in 2024. And hopefully its high-resolution cameras can capture the airplane’s tail number: NR16020 to confirm the missing aviator has been found.
