The use of public charging stations is common both here in America and around the world. In many cases, these charging stations can be found at shopping malls, airports, and other similar settings where many people are coming and going.
In a time when folks rely on their phones for GPS navigation, rideshare, and more, the importance of charging them is clearly true-to-life. However, new information from the FBI reveals that some very real problems have been discovered with public charging stations.
A critical word of warning
FBI officials contend that public charging stations remain vulnerable to hackers. Apparently, hackers have discovered ways to infect USB ports available to the public with malware and unwanted surveillance programs.
For Americans who want to charge their devices on the go, the FBI recommends some simple alternatives. People have been advised to carry their own chargers with them. They should then use these chargers in standard electric outlets that exist on walls.
The malware that hackers can transfer onto electronic devices via public charging stations is now dubbed “juice jacking.”
