Archaeology Discoveries across the Middle East are providing new insights into thousands of years of human civilization. Recent excavations from the pharaohs of ancient Egypt to medieval fortresses in the West Bank have been uncovered.

An extensive temple complex dating to Egypt's 26th Dynasty is being investigated. And officials in the West Bank have also recovered dozens of looted artifacts from a historically significant archaeological site.

Both efforts underscore ongoing efforts to preserve the region's remarkable cultural heritage.

Archaeology Discoveries date back 5000 years

Experts say the discoveries highlight the Middle East's unparalleled archaeological importance, where civilizations including the Egyptians, Canaanites, Israelites, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, and early Islamic societies left behind monuments, temples, inscriptions and artifacts spanning more than 5,000 years.

Ancient Temple Unearthed in Egypt's Bahariya Oasis

Archaeologists recently completed excavations at the ancient village of al-Qasr in Egypt's Bahariya Oasis, revealing previously unexplored portions of an impressive temple complex dating to the country's 26th Dynasty.

The discovery was announced by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities following work by an archaeological mission from the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

Researchers uncovered the temple's main ceremonial hall, which featured 16 sandstone columns along with interconnected chambers and sacred shrines that once served religious ceremonies.

Dr. Hisham El-Leithy, Secretary-General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said archaeologists also discovered numerous stone blocks bearing the names and royal titles of King Psamtik I, the first pharaoh of Egypt's 26th Dynasty. That dynasty represented the final era of native Egyptian rule before the Persian conquest in 525 B.C.

Archaeology Discoveries Include Hieroglyphics That Honor Ancient Egyptian Gods

Among the most significant discoveries were remarkably preserved hieroglyphic inscriptions honoring several of ancient Egypt's most revered deities.

The carvings reference Amun-Ra, one of Egypt's supreme creator and sun gods, along with Amunet, his female counterpart, and Khonsu, the moon deity who played an important role in Egyptian religious beliefs.

Archaeologists also uncovered a stone stele dating to the 18th Dynasty during the reign of Amenhotep II, along with fragments from the reign of Ramesses II during the 19th Dynasty. These findings indicate the site remained an important religious center for centuries before the temple was expanded during the Late Period.

According to El-Leithy, the discoveries provide fresh evidence that the Bahariya Oasis functioned as an important religious, administrative and commercial center throughout multiple eras of Egyptian history.

Evidence of Greek and Roman Occupation in Archaeology Discoveries

The excavations also revealed that activity at the site extended well beyond Egypt's pharaonic period.

Sabry Farag, director-general of Bahariya Oasis Antiquities, said archaeologists found fourth- and fifth-century C.E. ostraca containing Coptic and Latin inscriptions, demonstrating continued occupation during the Greek and Roman periods.

Researchers also uncovered production basins believed to have been used for making wine and olive oil, offering additional evidence of a thriving settlement supported by agriculture and regional trade.

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy praised the excavation team, saying the discoveries deepen scholars' understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization while strengthening Egypt's cultural tourism industry.

Greco-Roman Cemetery Offers Additional Clues

Earlier this year, another archaeological mission uncovered an ancient Greco-Roman cemetery at Tel Kom Aziza in Egypt's Beheira Governorate.

The burial ground contained multiple styles of graves, ranging from simple earth burials to more elaborate mud-brick tombs. Archaeologists also found painted plaster coffins and barrel-shaped pottery coffins commonly associated with Egypt's Ptolemaic era.

The excavations revealed varying burial orientations and arm positions, reflecting evolving funerary customs across different historical periods.

One of the cemetery's most unusual discoveries was the complete burial of wild boars—an exceptionally rare find because the animals were associated with the god Set in ancient Egyptian mythology.

Older artifacts beneath the cemetery indicate the location remained occupied from Egypt's Old Kingdom through the New Kingdom, the Late Period, and into the Greek and Roman eras.

Looted Antiquities Recovered Include Archaeology Discoveries in the West Bank

Meanwhile, authorities recovered dozens of archaeological artifacts from the Burj Lasana site in the West Bank after investigators determined that ancient remains had been incorporated into a recently constructed villa.

The operation took place near Wadi Haramiya in Area B and was led by the Civil Administration's Staff Officer for Archaeology.

Officials recovered coins, carved stone capitals, architectural fragments and Byzantine-era stone columns that had allegedly been removed from the nearby Crusader fortress and displayed as decorative features inside the residence. Investigators also confiscated a metal detector believed to have been used in unauthorized artifact searches.

The recovered antiquities have been transferred to the Good Samaritan Museum for preservation, research and eventual public display.

Historic Site Spans More Than 2,000 Years

Archaeologists describe Burj Lasana as one of the West Bank's most significant historical sites.

Excavations have documented continuous occupation from the Iron Age through the medieval period. The site includes remains of a Crusader fortress, Byzantine church architecture, Roman agricultural installations, ritual baths and ancient burial caves.

Officials said increased monitoring of the location followed reports of illegal excavation and damage to protected archaeological remains.

Authorities emphasized that preserving archaeological sites is essential because once artifacts are removed from their original locations, valuable historical information about ancient cultures can be permanently lost.

The latest archaeology discoveries in Egypt and the West Bank illustrate how archaeological research continues to reshape historians' understanding of the ancient Middle East while highlighting the importance of protecting irreplaceable cultural treasures for future generations.
