Assault on Iran Escalates as U.S. Launches New Strikes and Trump Says Mission Is  ‘De-Nuking’

The Assault on Iran intensified after the United States launched another wave of military strikes against Iranian targets, only hours after President Donald Trump declared that an interim agreement aimed at ending the conflict was effectively "over."

The latest attacks came amid rising tensions across the Middle East, with Washington saying the operation was intended to protect international shipping and further degrade Iran's military capabilities as part of what Trump described as a campaign to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Recent Strikes on Iran were Counterattacks

The renewed fighting follows several days of escalating military exchanges between the United States and Iran, including attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, missile and drone strikes targeting American military facilities in the Gulf region, and retaliatory U.S. operations against Iranian military infrastructure.

According to U.S. officials, the latest military operation targeted facilities linked to Iran's ability to threaten commercial vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints.

U.S. Says Assault on Iran Was a Response to Shipping Attacks

The operation followed attacks on three cargo ships transiting the waterway. U.S. Central Command said the assault on Iran were strikes designed to hold them accountable for what it described as "unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway."

American officials later said the attacks struck approximately 80 Iranian military targets, with the newest wave reportedly larger than previous operations.

Among the facilities hit were coastal radar installations, anti-ship missile batteries, and air-defense systems believed to be operated by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Explosions were also reported on Abu Musa Island in the Persian Gulf, at military facilities in Bushehr Province, and near an airport reportedly used in part by the IRGC.

What Started the War with Iran?

The current conflict grew out of months of increasing regional tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States. Iran has been running terrorist campaigns against the US and other NATO countries for decades.

Israel has long maintained that Iran's rapidly advancing nuclear program poses an existential threat. Israeli leaders have argued that Tehran's continued uranium enrichment, expansion of nuclear facilities, and development of advanced centrifuges have brought the country closer to the capability to produce a nuclear weapon.

Iran has consistently denied seeking to build nuclear weapons, insisting that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful civilian energy and scientific research. However, international inspectors and Western governments have expressed concern over Iran's enrichment levels, stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, and reduced cooperation with international monitoring efforts.

The conflict escalated dramatically after Israel launched military operations targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, missile production sites, senior military commanders, and Revolutionary Guard infrastructure.

The United States later joined the campaign, arguing that preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon was essential to regional and global security.

Trump Calls Assault on Iran a "De-Nuking"

Speaking aboard Air Force One, President Trump rejected characterizing the military operation as a traditional war.

"This is really not a war so much," Trump told reporters. "It's a de-nuking of Iran, de-nuclearization of Iran."

The President said the objective was to eliminate Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons rather than occupy territory or overthrow the Iranian government.

"So, this is all about taking nuclear weapons, not allowing Iran to have nuclear weapons, and everybody should like that," Trump said.

Administration officials have similarly described the military campaign as focused on dismantling facilities associated with Iran's nuclear and missile programs.

Response to Assault on Iran is Missile and Drone Attacks

Iran responded by launching missiles and drones toward American military installations across the Gulf region.

Officials in Kuwait and Bahrain reported incoming attacks overnight, with air-defense systems intercepting many of the projectiles. Air-raid sirens sounded across several Gulf states before authorities eventually issued all-clear notices after the immediate threat had passed.

Iranian state media described the attacks as a response to continued American military operations inside Iranian territory.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized President Trump's rhetoric after the President referred to Iran's leadership as "scum" during a NATO summit.

"Addressing the civilized and courageous nation of Iran with derogatory language does not diminish its greatness," Araghchi said. "We do not answer vulgarity with vulgarity, but with action."

Strait of Hormuz Remains a Critical Flashpoint

A major focus of the conflict remains the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes each day.

The narrow waterway connects the Persian Gulf to global shipping routes and has long been viewed as one of the world's most important energy corridors. Any disruption can send oil prices sharply higher and threaten international trade.

Following the latest escalation, crude oil prices rose by approximately seven percent as investors weighed the possibility of additional attacks on commercial shipping.

Analysts have long noted that Iran's geographic position gives it significant leverage over maritime traffic through the strait, making it a recurring source of geopolitical tension whenever relations with the United States deteriorate.

Uncertainty Over Future Negotiations

Despite the renewed military operations, President Trump suggested he does not expect the conflict to develop into a prolonged conventional war.

However, he also questioned whether any future agreement with Tehran would prove durable, saying he remained skeptical that Iran would honor a long-term peace arrangement.

It remains unclear whether diplomatic negotiations will resume following the latest exchange of military strikes. International observers continue to warn that additional attacks could further destabilize the Middle East and increase the risk of a wider regional conflict involving multiple nations.
