The sudden loss of a longtime educator has left a school community grieving after the Baltimore teacher elementary school death was confirmed Monday morning.

Officials say the beloved teacher was discovered inside Arundel Elementary School, sending waves of sorrow through classrooms and hallways where she had spent years helping students grow.

Veteran Educator Found at School

School leaders identified the teacher as Deborah Tolson, a mathematics interventionist who had dedicated 23 years to Baltimore City Public Schools.

Tolson had served the last seven years at Arundel Elementary School, where she was widely known by students and colleagues as both a mentor and a guiding presence.

Officials said she was discovered inside the school building Monday morning after passing away over the weekend.

Medical Examiner Confirms Cause of Death

The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that Tolson died from a stroke.

Her sudden passing stunned the school community, prompting administrators to adjust the school schedule so students and staff could begin processing the loss.

School Releases Students Early

In response to the tragedy, Arundel Elementary School dismissed students early at 10:15 a.m. Monday.

Administrators said the shortened school day allowed teachers, students and staff time to cope with the devastating news.

Principal Kerry-Ann Malcolm shared the announcement in a message sent to families.

In her letter, Malcolm described Tolson as a deeply valued member of the school.

“Ms. Tolson was a very beloved member of our school community for seven years,” Malcolm wrote.

She described the educator as “a pillar of the school community,” adding that Tolson was cherished by both students and fellow staff members.

Crisis Team Sent to Support Students

Officials said crisis counselors from Baltimore City Public Schools were deployed to the campus to support those affected by the loss.

The district’s crisis team is offering emotional support and resources for students, teachers and staff as the school navigates the difficult days ahead.

“Our hearts and thoughts remain with Ms. Tolson’s family and friends, as well as our entire school community, in this difficult time,” Malcolm said.

Parents Urged to Speak With Children

School officials are encouraging families to discuss the tragedy with their children.

Malcolm urged parents and guardians to allow students space to express their emotions and ask questions about what happened.

“Please expect our students to be affected in some way with this news,” she wrote. “I encourage you to talk about what happened and allow your child to discuss her or his feelings and thoughts.”
