Barbie, one of 2023's most anticipated movies, is here. Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Barbie brings the famous doll that's been around for generations to the big screen.

Many young girls today play with Barbie dolls, just as their moms and even grandmothers before them may have also played with Barbies.

However, Gerwig's Barbie casts the iconic doll in an entirely new light, giving her unique agency and a path of her own to follow.

Welcome to Barbie Land

For just under two hours, viewers get to see Margot Robbie's "Stereotypical Barbie," along with other Barbies in powerful positions. Women like Issa Rae, Alexandria Shipp, Emma Mackey, etc., portray various Barbies in the roles of writers, presidents, and other powerful positions.

Throughout the film, Stereotypical Barbie discovers the journey of figuring out who she is, who she wants to be, who she doesn't want to be, and what's contributed to her current identity. She learns about the world around her, the real world outside of Barbie Land, and how all the pieces fit together.

Barbie conveys to audiences the importance of individual agency and finding an identity that is true to you, rather than merely an extension of someone else. This message is one that will especially click with girls and women watching, as female empowerment and autonomy stand out as clear themes of Barbie.

Ultimately, a wholesome blend of humor, adventure, feminism, and purpose makes Barbie a touching movie that's worth watching.

A new journey for Ken

Traditionally, people consider Ken as an afterthought in the world of Barbie. Since Barbie's inception, Ken's identity has revolved around her; however, Greta Gerwig's film does a wonderful job of tackling this issue as well.

When Ken accompanies Barbie to the real world, he gets a culture shock upon observing its massive differences compared to Barbie Land. Yet, by the film's ending, viewers will see Ken also begin to carve out an identity for himself that doesn't just revolve around Stereotypical Barbie.

Barbie is now available in movie theaters nationwide. So far, it carries an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Barbie's audience score likewise stands at an impressive 90%.
