Bitcoin Twins See Bitcoin’s $65,000 Level as a New Buying Opportunity

The Bitcoin Twins, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, are once again making the case for Bitcoin as investors navigate a sharp cryptocurrency downturn and a powerful rotation of money into artificial intelligence stocks.

Cameron Winklevoss said Aug. 18 that the AI boom has effectively created a “time machine” for investors, allowing them to purchase Bitcoin near $65,000 after the cryptocurrency previously climbed to far higher levels.

“The AI trade has given the world a time machine to go back in time and invest in Bitcoin at $65k,” Cameron Winklevoss wrote on X.

The Bitcoin Twins are Analysts

His comments came as Bitcoin traded around the $65,000 level, a dramatic decline from the cryptocurrency's 2025 peak above $126,000.

Cameron described the situation as an “unprecedented time to buy the dip,” arguing that investors who wished they had purchased Bitcoin at a much earlier stage now have another opportunity.

The comments reflect the increasingly divided outlook surrounding Bitcoin as capital moves between cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence companies and technology stocks.

Bitcoin Faces Pressure as AI Attracts Investors

Bitcoin's recent decline has occurred alongside a broader shift in investor attention toward companies benefiting from the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.

Some retail investors and hedge funds have reduced cryptocurrency exposure while directing money toward semiconductor manufacturers, technology companies and other businesses associated with AI infrastructure. That movement has contributed to pressure on Bitcoin and other digital assets.

Market data showed Bitcoin briefly moving above $65,000 on Aug. 18 before easing back toward the mid-$64,000 range. The $65,000 level has become an important area for traders watching for signs of stabilization or another leg lower.

The Winklevoss thesis is straightforward: If investors were willing to buy Bitcoin at substantially higher prices, a return to the $65,000 range could represent a significant discount.

That does not mean a recovery is guaranteed. Bitcoin remains a highly volatile asset, and the cryptocurrency market has repeatedly experienced severe drawdowns. BlackRock's own investment materials warn that Bitcoin can experience extreme price swings and substantial losses.

The Bitcoin Twins from College Technology to Bitcoin

The Bitcoin Twins have been involved in developing cutting-edge technology since their college days, long before cryptocurrency became a mainstream investment category.

While attending Harvard University, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss worked with classmate Divya Narendra to develop ConnectU, an early social networking platform launched in 2004. The project ultimately became part of a legal dispute involving Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.

The dispute was settled for $65 million, according to the background provided in the original account. The twins later used part of their wealth to invest in Bitcoin in 2012, becoming prominent early adopters of the cryptocurrency.

Their path from social-networking technology to digital assets helped establish the Winklevoss brothers as major figures in the emerging cryptocurrency industry.

What is Gemini?

In 2014, they founded Gemini, a cryptocurrency exchange designed to provide a regulated platform for buying, selling and holding digital assets. Gemini subsequently expanded beyond basic cryptocurrency trading into custody, staking, credit cards, prediction markets and other financial services.

Gemini became a publicly traded company in September 2025. Its Class A shares began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker GEMI on Sept. 12, 2025, following an initial public offering priced at $28 per share.

The company has continued expanding its technology platform. In July 2026, Gemini launched commission-free trading in thousands of U.S.-listed stocks, describing the move as part of its effort to become an all-in-one financial platform.

Gemini Reports Mixed Second-Quarter Results

The latest financial results from Gemini illustrate the difficult environment facing cryptocurrency businesses.

Gemini reported Aug. 13 that second-quarter revenue increased 37% year over year to $45.5 million. However, exchange revenue fell 38% to $12.5 million as trading volume declined sharply.

Total trading volume dropped to $3.8 billion from $11.3 billion during the same quarter a year earlier. At the same time, services revenue and interest income increased substantially, helping offset weakness in the company's core exchange business.

Gemini also reported that services revenue increased 149% year over year to $23.5 million. Credit card revenue and staking activity contributed to the company's effort to diversify its sources of income as cryptocurrency trading remained under pressure.

The results suggest that Gemini is attempting to become less dependent on the trading cycle. That strategy is particularly important as Bitcoin's decline reduces transaction activity and the value of cryptocurrency assets held on platforms.

The Bitcoin Twins are Betting on Digital Assets

The Winklevoss brothers' latest Bitcoin argument also comes as they continue making investments in cryptocurrency-related technology.

On Aug. 18, Cypherpunk Technologies announced the launch of what it described as the world's largest Zcash mining fleet following a $33.33 million equity-based transaction involving Winklevoss Capital. The company said the U.S.-based operation had approximately 4.2 gigasols per second of Equihash computing power, representing about 18% of the Zcash network at launch.

The development underscores the twins' continuing interest in blockchain infrastructure beyond Bitcoin itself.

Their broader investment strategy suggests that Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss continue to view digital assets as a long-term technological and financial transformation rather than simply a short-term trading trend.

Bitcoin's Next Move Remains Uncertain

The major question for investors is whether Bitcoin's decline represents a temporary correction or the beginning of a prolonged bear market.

Cameron Winklevoss clearly favors the first interpretation. Other market observers have been more cautious. Anthony Scaramucci, for example, has characterized Bitcoin as being in a bear market while maintaining a longer-term price target of $100,000.

BlackRock has also highlighted the long-term investment case for Bitcoin while acknowledging its substantial volatility. Its 2026 investment outlook said a modest Bitcoin allocation could improve historical risk-adjusted portfolio returns, although the firm emphasized that past performance is not a guarantee of future results.

For the Bitcoin Twins, however, the current market weakness appears to represent an opportunity. Their argument is rooted in the same conviction that drove their early Bitcoin investment: technological change can create new financial markets, and periods of intense skepticism can produce opportunities for investors willing to accept substantial risk.

Whether Bitcoin eventually returns to its previous highs remains uncertain. For now, the $65,000 level has become a symbolic test of that thesis — and a price Cameron Winklevoss believes investors should be watching closely.
