China raises US Tariffs To 125%

In a thunderclap escalation of the simmering U.S.-China trade war, Beijing announced Friday it is hiking tariffs on American imports to a punishing 125%—a retaliatory strike against President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policy, which has now set tariffs on most Chinese goods at a staggering 145%. The announcement signals a deepening divide between the world’s two largest economies, now entangled in a tit-for-tat economic war with no clear exit ramp.

China Draws a Line: No More “Tariff Bullying”

China’s Tariff Commission, part of the State Council, minced no words in a fiery statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, accusing the Trump administration of strong-arm tactics and pledging not to mirror future U.S. increases.

“There is no market acceptance for U.S. goods at the current tariff level. If the U.S. continues its path, China will simply ignore it,” the statement read.

This announcement marks a pivotal moment in a trade battle that kicked off in February, when Trump began layering additional tariffs on Chinese goods. What began as a 10% surcharge has now exploded into a full-scale economic slugfest.

Trump’s Numbers Game: Real or Rhetorical?

Though President Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent both claimed on Wednesday that tariffs on Chinese goods would total 125%, an executive order and the Harmonized Tariff Schedule suggest a compounded total of 145%. A White House official confirmed that most Chinese imports will indeed face that rate, while steel and aluminum products could be subject to even higher duties.

“America holds the upper hand here,” the unnamed official claimed. “No other country has our level of consumer spending power. China can’t just pivot elsewhere.”

Yet not everyone agrees. A study released Friday by the Peterson Institute for International Economics placed the effective U.S. tariff rate at 134.7%—still a colossal sixfold increase from when Trump first took office and 40 times the level seen when the broader trade war erupted in 2018.

Beijing Unfazed, Hollywood Caught in the Crossfire

China's Ministry of Commerce dismissed the spiraling tariff rates as “a numbers game without practical significance.” But the message was clear: continued economic aggression would be met with unflinching resistance.

“If the U.S. continues to infringe upon China’s rights and interests, we will resolutely counter and fight to the end,” the ministry warned.

Already, China is pushing back in other cultural arenas. The China Film Administration said Thursday it would scale back the number of American movies entering Chinese theaters, citing waning audience appeal amid escalating tariffs.

“We will respect market dynamics and reduce imports of U.S. films,” the regulator declared.

Debt Diplomacy and Currency Shockwaves

While the war of words continues, financial analysts are eyeing potential economic time bombs. China, which holds just under 9% of U.S. Treasury securities, may begin dumping American debt—a move that could rattle U.S. interest rates and the broader economy.

“Trump can’t fight back on that front,” said Prem Sikka, professor emeritus at the University of Essex. “Selling U.S. bonds would drive up interest rates—a dangerous card for China to play.”

Robin Brooks, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, predicted the Chinese yuan could face pressure to depreciate as investors brace for capital flight. “To stop the yuan from freefalling, China may start unloading U.S. Treasuries, which is likely fueling rising yields,” Brooks warned.

Indeed, yields on 10-year Treasury notes jumped 40 basis points this week, signaling market unease.

White House Pushes Forward Despite Risks

Despite mounting global concern, the White House appears committed to its hardline stance. Secretary Bessent attempted to soothe fears during a Thursday Cabinet meeting, pointing to stable inflation data and successful bond auctions.

“We had a good day—nothing unusual to report,” he said.

Trump, meanwhile, struck a somewhat conciliatory note regarding future negotiations.

“I’m sure we’ll get along just fine,” he said. “We’ll work something out that’s good for both countries.”

But critics argue the administration is charging ahead without a long-term strategy. Oren Cass, chief economist at American Compass, called the 145% rate “unwise” and cautioned that China may end up alienating potential allies if it dumps surplus exports onto their markets.

“The U.S. needs to clearly define what it wants from its future relationship with China,” Cass wrote.

What’s Next?

The administration’s bold tariff policy is part of a broader framework introduced April 2, and stems from a U.S. Trade Representative report released March 31 outlining barriers ranging from digital trade restrictions to intellectual property disputes.

While Trump’s team is framing the moment as a necessary pivot in global trade, others warn that this may be the beginning of a prolonged and painful economic clash. As the two superpowers harden their stances, the world watches—nervously.

One thing is certain: in the high-stakes chessboard of global trade, each move carries risks that ripple far beyond tariffs.
