A Rare Legal Win in the Fight to Collect on a Nine-Figure Verdict

A Los Angeles judge has cleared the way for direct collection against one of music's highest-grossing current tours. LOS ANGELES - Chris Brown is about to see a real chunk of his touring income redirected — not to his label, not to his team, but to the woman who once cleaned his house.

A Los Angeles judge has sided with Maria Avila, granting her request to collect directly from Brown's royalties and tour earnings to satisfy the nearly $13 million judgment she won against him earlier this year. Brown's attorneys pushed back hard, arguing the request reached too far into his present and future income. The judge wasn't persuaded, and the order now stands — even as Brown continues packing stadiums across North America on his co-headlining run with Usher.

The case traces back to December 2020, when Avila was taking out the trash at Brown's Tarzana property and was attacked without warning by Hades, a roughly 200-pound Caucasian shepherd that Brown has described as a security animal rather than a household pet. The mauling left her with permanent facial scarring, nerve damage, and partial loss of vision, along with lasting emotional trauma.

At trial, Brown maintained he had warned Avila about the dogs on the property and argued she shouldn't have been in that area without his security detail present. He also testified that he avoided personally calling 911 that night, fearing the incident would leak to the press. A jury rejected his defense outright. In June, jurors found Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, liable for negligence and awarded Avila roughly $12.9 million — a figure widely rounded to $13 million in press coverage. Her sister, who witnessed the attack, was separately awarded $885,000 for emotional distress, and Avila's husband received $50,000 for loss of consortium, pushing the combined verdict above $13.8 million.

Winning a jury verdict, though, is only half the battle. Actually collecting from a touring megastar is another matter entirely — which is why Avila's team went back to court. According to filings, Brown had made no meaningful effort to pay any portion of the judgment in the weeks following the verdict. Rather than wait on a voluntary payment, Avila's attorneys asked the court for authority to intercept income at the source: touring revenue, music royalties, residuals, and proceeds from other entertainment projects, before any of it reached Brown directly.

The timing adds another layer of pressure. Brown and Usher's co-headlining stadium run, "The R&B Tour," has become one of the biggest live-music draws of the year, reportedly pulling in well over $150 million across its first several dozen shows, with the run recently extended by additional stadium dates in cities including Baltimore, Atlanta, and Miami. With career touring revenue reportedly closing in on the billion-dollar mark, there's no shortage of income for the judgment to attach to — the legal question was simply whether a court would let Avila reach it before it passed through Brown's hands.

It's still unclear whether Brown will seek reconsideration or file an appeal. Either move could potentially pause, or "stay," enforcement of the judgment while the case works its way through further review. For now, though, the collection order stands, and Avila's legal team has secured something plaintiffs rarely get against wealthy, mobile-income defendants: a direct line to the money as it's earned.
