A High-Stakes Acquisition Now Under Scrutiny

Cognizant acquired TriZetto in September 2014 for $2.7 billion, one of the largest overseas acquisitions by an Indian IT services firm at the time. The deal turbocharged Cognizant’s healthcare business, which has since grown into its largest segment, accounting for nearly one-third of total revenue.

In 2024, Cognizant reported $19.74 billion in revenue, underscoring the scale of operations now shadowed by the breach allegations.

What Comes Next

Industry analysts say the lawsuits could stretch on for more than a year before any resolution. Peter Bendor-Samuel, founder of IT research firm Everest Group, said cyber risks are universal in tech services, but Cognizant’s blend of software platforms and outsourcing heightens its exposure.

He noted that such cases are often covered by insurance, though total costs can still reach tens of millions of dollars. The dispute highlights the growing cyber threats facing healthcare claims processors, which sit atop vast troves of sensitive patient data.
