Sam Bankman-Fried,31, the founder of FTX, a once-powerful cryptocurrency exchange, was known as the “Crypto King. On Friday, his bail was revoked by US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who accused him of leaking his ex-girlfriend's love letters to a media outlet.

He was indicted in December 2022 for fraud. And has been under house arrest at his parents’ mansion in Palo Alto, Calif. on a $250 million bond.

Bankman-Fried is being accused of swindling customers out of billions of dollars. He is alleged to have misused billions in FTX customer funds to fund a lavish lifestyle, as well as funneling client money to Alameda.  And spent millions on lobbying and contributions to US politicians.

The once-respected figure in the crypto world is accused of leaking the personal love letters of his ex-girlfriend and former business associate, Caroline Ellison, to a New York Times reporter.

This leak led to his bail being revoked by Judge Kaplan, who concluded that Bankman-Fried's actions jeopardized the trial proceedings.

Allegations of Witness Tampering bt Crypto King

Ellison and two former FTX executives, Nishad Singh, and Gary Wang, are cooperating in the case against Bankman-Fried.

Federal prosecutors claim Bankman-Fried's leaks are an attempt to tamper with witnesses. And that there is probable cause to believe that he had engaged in such behavior multiple times since his arrest.

Judge Kaplan agreed with the prosecution and revoked the bail of the now disgraced Crypto King.

The judge's ruling sends Bankman-Fried from his parents' mansion to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, pending his trial set for October 2.

Bankman-Fried's defense attorney, Mark Cohen, claims they will appeal the incarceration order, seeking an immediate stay.

The defense team accused prosecutors of relying on "innuendo, speculation, and scant facts" to push for Bankman-Fried's jailing. Cohen argued that his client's bail terms allowed media interactions, suggesting that revoking this right would infringe on Bankman-Fried's freedom of speech.

Cohen also noted that his client has had “many, many negative stories” published about him and his relationships and argued Bankman-Fried’s media outreach was meant “to protect his reputation” before the start of trial.

The case has also brought attention to media influence and the concept of a gag order. In a hearing, Kaplan restricted Bankman-Fried from discussing his case publicly, raising discussions about its implications for fair trial proceedings. The New York Times requested a loosening of the gag order to only restrict comments that could interfere with a fair trial, highlighting the tension between the right to speak and the need for an impartial trial.

A July 20 NYTimes article contained excerpts from Ellison’s private Google doc’s.

The leaked letters have offered insights into the personal dynamics between Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison. These writings, prior to FTX's collapse, reveal Ellison's concerns about their relationship affecting their professional environment at Alameda Research, Bankman-Fried's cryptocurrency hedge fund.

Ellison described being “unhappy and overwhelmed” with her job and feeling “hurt/rejected” from her personal breakup with Bankman-Fried.

She added in April 2022 that she “felt too associated with [Bankman-Fried] in a way that was painful.”

The trial's outcome could reshape the landscape for FTX and potentially influence the broader regulatory scrutiny faced by the crypto sector.
