According to the indictment, Nathan Carman used the guise of the expedition to kill his mother, subsequently claiming that their boat sank and his mother vanished during the accident.

Carman was found adrift in an inflatable raft eight days after leaving a Rhode Island marina, while his mother was never found.

Prosecutors contended he manipulated the boat’s structure, making it prone to sinking—an accusation that Carman refuted.

The End of a Complex Case

With Carman’s death, the authorities announced the dismissal of the charges. “The United States received information from the U.S. Marshal that Carman died on or about June 15, 2023.

Dismissal of the charges against Carman is thus appropriate,” the federal prosecutors’ court filing stated.

His defense attorney, visibly shaken by the development, said: “I’m just numb.” Carman was being held at a jail in Keene, New Hampshire.

His death brings an abrupt end to a court case that promised to expose a web of deceit and murder in its pursuit of justice
