Photos obtained during the investigation reveal Cano posing casually with four alleged TDA gang members. Dressed in shorts and sneakers, Cano leans back in an urban stance, a beer in one hand and the peace sign in the other. The others, also holding beers, flank him. One even has a bear beside him in what looks like a staged, prideful moment of camaraderie.
What business does a former cop and active magistrate judge have socializing with a group labeled by the U.S. government as a transnational criminal organization? Why would he allow such individuals to stay in his home, especially considering allegations that Ortega-López had access to high-caliber firearms and engaged in training at a shooting range?
This isn’t just unethical. It could be criminal.
According to court filings, Ortega-López was found with illegal weapons and photos linking him to the Tren de Aragua gang—a group recently designated by U.S. officials as a transnational terrorist group and national security threat due to its involvement in human trafficking, narcotics, arms smuggling, and unthinkable violence across the Americas.
The implications are staggering. Cano’s residence may have been used as a stash house for weapons or served as a base of operations for a sleeper cell. At minimum, it served as a sanctuary for a potential terrorist.
Meanwhile, the silence from the Democratic Party in New Mexico has been deafening. Cano has issued no public statement. No one has come forward to defend him. Even his resignation was announced without fanfare or explanation.
Critics and former litigants have already begun speaking out.
“I hate Cano. He took our landlord’s side, even though we had evidence,” wrote Loriana N. on Facebook. “This town is fucked.”
Another commenter, Jan V., noted, “One guy had an active warrant. Cano told him he wasn’t going to arrest him but said he should take care of it.”
These statements, while anecdotal, paint a picture of a judge whose leniency may have gone well beyond professional discretion.
With the judge now out of office and Cano’s wife, Nancy, also potentially implicated in harboring Ortega-López, may herself, face a full investigation by the Department of Justice. Federal agents are also said to be scrutinizing recent cases overseen by Cano for signs of improper influence or misconduct.
There are whispers that this may not be an isolated incident, but rather part of a broader network involving elected officials offering sanctuary to foreign nationals with criminal ties. Whether these individuals are being used as “extrajudicial enforcers” for judges like Cano, or have leverage over their hosts is a question DOJ investigators are keen to answer.
Even deeper, the fact that Cano permitted Ortega-López to use his home address for ICE purposes is not just suspect—it is potentially criminal. Was Cano helping Ortega-López evade immigration enforcement? And why would a 70-something-year-old former cop feel compelled to share his home with a 23-year-old undocumented man?
Was there a quid pro quo? Was Ortega-López providing some service or acting as muscle for the judge? Was Cano leveraging his position in exchange for loyalty or silence?
The public deserves answers.
The scandal also has political consequences. With Republican officials in Washington sharpening their scrutiny of judicial appointments and ICE enforcement loopholes, Cano’s resignation provides potent fodder for calls to reform immigration policy and judicial oversight.
The idea that a sitting judge—a former police officer—was harboring a foreign national tied to one of the world’s most violent gangs is not just outrageous. It is terrifying.
The fact that this man was in possession of weapons, engaged in paramilitary training, and used a judge’s address to hide in plain sight raises serious national security concerns.
The silence from Democratic leadership, the secrecy of Cano’s resignation, and the absence of mainstream media coverage only deepen suspicions.
The DOJ must act swiftly, and if the facts continue to trend in the direction they appear to be heading, criminal charges should follow.
