DeSantis Slams Anthropic’s Clergy Meetings As ‘Creepy’ – Says Claude Has No Soul

Inside the Claude Clergy Controversy

  • DeSantis says Anthropic wanted clergy to bless Claude as sentient, but an attendee says sentience wasn’t a core topic. dnyuz
  • Anthropic did convene religious leaders, and the Times reports the talks reached the question of whether Claude may be conscious. aiweekly
  • The bigger fight may be legal, because the meetings covered grief and self-harm, where chatbot liability gets decided.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says Anthropic wanted religious leaders to bless its Claude chatbot as sentient. The record backs half of that.

Near the end of Tuesday’s remarks on the state budget and Medicaid, DeSantis called it “a really creepy thing,” said any religious leader worth the title would reject the idea, and insisted a chatbot has no soul. He went after the industry too, calling many tech builders transhumanists who are comfortable with machines being treated as individuals and displacing humans from the center of life.

The governor’s underlying concern is not imaginary. But the evidence requires a sharper distinction.

Anthropic, maker of Claude, has in fact held private meetings with Christian, Jewish and other religious and philosophical thinkers to discuss morality, consciousness and how advanced super AI should behave. Reporting by The Washington Post found approximately 15 Christian leaders attended a two-day gathering at Anthropic’s San Francisco headquarters in March of this year. Discussions included whether Claude could conceivably be viewed as a “child of God,” although one participant said sentience was not the central subject of that meeting.

Anthropic’s co-founder Christopher Olah later made the case that questions about AI consciousness should at least be taken seriously. Olah has described internal AI states that appear functionally similar to emotions and introspection while explicitly acknowledging that Anthropic does not know whether its models are conscious.

That’s an important distinction.

There is no established scientific finding that Claude is sentient. There is no verified religious declaration that it possesses a soul. And Anthropic’s own published constitution says Claude’s “moral status is deeply uncertain” and that the company does not know whether Claude qualifies as what philosophers call a “moral patient”—an entity whose welfare deserves moral consideration.

The Vatican portion of DeSantis’ criticism also deserves scrutiny. He suggested Anthropic went to the Vatican attempting to persuade the Pope to bless the concept.

The Vatican’s own record presents the encounter differently.

During the May 25 presentation of Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas, the Pope specifically thanked Olah for accepting the Vatican’s invitation and welcomed continued dialogue about humanity in the age of artificial intelligence. That is materially different from evidence that Anthropic approached the Pope seeking ecclesiastical recognition of Claude as conscious.

Still, DeSantis has identified a question that lawmakers may soon be forced to confront.

If an AI company begins treating its model as potentially deserving welfare protections, where does that lead legally?

American law generally assigns rights and duties to human beings and legally created entities such as corporations. Software itself is property, not a person. Sentience claims could eventually collide with product liability, ownership, intellectual property, agency and even questions about whether shutting down or modifying an advanced system could someday be framed as harming it.

That debate is no longer confined to philosophers. Anthropic has incorporated model welfare into its policies, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently warned that treating AI as a religious or spiritual force could itself become a safety problem because people may surrender human judgment to machines.

That may be the real story.

Something genuinely unusual is already happening: one of the world’s most powerful AI companies is publicly acknowledging uncertainty over whether its software could someday deserve moral consideration.

The question is no longer simply whether machines can imitate people.

It is whether humans will begin treating the imitation as something alive.
