Dick Van Dyke

Dick Van Dyke celebrated his 100th Birthday Saturday with tributes across the entertainment world, special screenings of a new documentary, and reflections from the legendary performer himself, who says that even at 100, he is not finished with life—or laughter.

Speaking from his Malibu, California, home, the beloved actor, dancer, and comedian offered a perspective shaped by a century of experience. He has an undiminished enthusiasm for living.

“The funniest thing is, it’s not enough,” Van Dyke told ABC News in a recent interview. “A hundred years is not enough. You want to live more, which I plan to.”

A National Celebration for Dick Van Dyke’s 100th Birthday

As part of the celebration of Dick Van Dyke’s 100th Birthday, theaters across the United States are screening a new documentary, “Dick Van Dyke: 100th Celebration,” which chronicles his extraordinary career and personal journey. The film highlights his impact on television, film, Broadway, and American comedy, offering fans a chance to revisit the moments that defined generations of entertainment.

The milestone arrives more than six decades after Van Dyke famously sang and danced alongside Julie Andrews in Disney’s “Mary Poppins” and became a household name on “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”

A Career That Defined Television and Film

Van Dyke rose to superstardom with “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” which aired on CBS from 1961 to 1966 and remains one of the most influential sitcoms in television history. His portrayal of comedy writer Rob Petrie blended physical comedy with sharp wit, setting a standard that continues to influence performers today.

In 1964, Van Dyke cemented his film legacy as Bert the chimney sweep in Disney’s “Mary Poppins,” a role remembered for its exuberant dance numbers and enduring charm. Decades later, he found renewed television success in his 70s, starring as a physician-turned-sleuth in “Diagnosis: Murder.”

A Broadway star as well, Van Dyke won a Tony Award for “Bye Bye Birdie,” later reprising his role in the 1963 film adaptation. Over his career, he has earned a Grammy Award and four Primetime Emmy Awards, a rare combination that underscores his versatility.

Breaking Barriers and Personal Struggles

Beyond his professional achievements, Van Dyke has been candid about his personal challenges. In the 1970s, he found sobriety after struggling with alcoholism, speaking openly about it at a time when such honesty was uncommon in Hollywood.

That openness, combined with his humor, has helped shape his enduring public image—not just as a performer, but as a resilient and thoughtful figure.

Perspective at 100 Years Old

Reaching triple digits has also given Van Dyke new insight into aging—particularly how he once portrayed older characters.

“You know, I played old men a lot, and I always played them as angry and cantankerous,” he told ABC News. “It’s not really that way. I don’t know any other 100-year-olds, but I can speak for myself.”

He recently shared his philosophy on longevity in his book, “100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life,” where he emphasizes positivity, curiosity, and humor.

Love, Laughter, and Still Dancing

Van Dyke credits his wife, 54-year-old makeup artist and producer Arlene Silver, with helping him stay young at heart.

“She gives me energy. She gives me humor and all kinds of support,” he said.

Born in West Plains, Missouri, in 1925 and raised in Danville, Illinois, Van Dyke described himself as “the class clown,” inspired by silent film comedians. He said his love of performing began at age four or five during a Christmas pageant.

“I made some kind of crack, I don’t know what I said, but it broke the congregation up,” he recalled. “And I liked the sound of that laughter.”

As for the hardest part of turning 100?

“I miss movement,” he said. “I’ve got one game leg from I don’t know what.” Still, he added with a laugh, “I still try to dance.”
