Methylene chloride has been commonly utilized in products like aerosol degreasers and paint removers. Commercially, it appears in adhesives and sealants, while industrially, it is used in the production of other chemicals.

EPA Finalizes Methylene Chloride Ban : Health Risks and EPA’s Response

Michal Freedhoff, the EPA’s Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, highlighted the dual risks of acute poisoning and chronic exposure. Chronic exposure to methylene chloride can lead to severe health issues, including liver, reproductive, and immune system damage, and is linked to at least six types of cancer.

Exemptions and Ongoing Uses

Despite the broad scope of the ban, the EPA finalizes methylene chloride use exceptions in certain industrial processes and federal applications. These include the manufacture of more environmentally friendly refrigerants, production of battery separators for electric vehicles, and specific uses in laboratory settings, plastic and rubber manufacturing, and solvent welding.
