The widow of legendary rapper The Notorious B.I.G. is facing serious legal challenges as she stands accused of allegedly enriching herself at the expense of her late husband's estate trust following a massive $100 million music catalog sale.

Faith Evans, who married Christopher Wallace (The Notorious B.I.G.) in 1994, is being sued by the estate of Biggie's late mother, Voletta Wallace, in a Delaware court case that was unsealed on July 8, 2025. The lawsuit alleges that Evans has been systematically excluding the trust from both financial distributions and business decisions since assuming sole management control of the rapper's estate.

Background of the $100 Million Deal

The controversy stems from a significant business transaction involving the sale of The Notorious B.I.G.'s music catalog to Primary Wave Music for approximately $100 million. This deal represented one of the most substantial music catalog acquisitions in recent years, involving the works of one of hip-hop's most influential artists who was tragically killed in 1997 at the age of 24.

The estate's complex structure includes multiple beneficiaries, including Evans herself, Biggie's children Ty'anna and CJ Wallace, and a trust established for his late mother, Voletta Wallace, who passed away in February 2025.

Trust Manager's Allegations

Wayne Barrow, who serves as the manager of Voletta Wallace's trust, has filed the lawsuit claiming that Evans has been acting improperly since taking control of the estate's Limited Liability Company (LLC) following Voletta's death. According to the court documents, Barrow alleges that Evans has been distributing sale proceeds selectively while deliberately withholding the trust's rightful share.

"Ms. Evans has distributed sale proceeds to Ty'anna, CJ, and presumably to herself," Barrow stated in the legal filing. "She, however, has wrongfully withheld the Trust's share of the proceeds, in the amount of [redacted]."

The lawsuit paints a picture of Evans allegedly cutting off communication with Barrow regarding all business matters related to the estate, effectively treating the trust as if it no longer exists within the estate's structure.

Management Disputes and Business Operations

A particularly contentious aspect of the lawsuit involves Evans' qualifications to manage the complex business operations of the estate. Barrow's petition emphasizes that unlike himself, Evans "has never previously been involved in the LLC's management," raising questions about her ability to handle the sophisticated financial and business decisions required in managing a multi-million-dollar music catalog.

The legal documents suggest that Evans' actions represent a significant departure from the estate's previous management structure, where multiple parties had input into major business decisions. Barrow alleges that this change in management style has resulted in a lack of transparency and accountability that has harmed the trust's interests.

Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation at Stake

The withheld funds are not merely sitting idle but are intended to support the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation, an organization established to honor the rapper's legacy and provide educational opportunities for young people. According to Barrow's filing, the trust's share of the catalog sale proceeds was specifically designated to fund the foundation's charitable activities.

This adds another layer of significance to the lawsuit, as the alleged withholding of funds could impact the foundation's ability to carry out its mission of supporting youth education and community development programs.

Legal Remedies Sought

Barrow is seeking multiple forms of relief from the Delaware court. Primarily, he wants the court to compel Evans to distribute the trust's rightful share of the catalog sale proceeds. Additionally, he is requesting that Evans be removed as manager of the LLC and that he be appointed to take over the management responsibilities.

The lawsuit represents more than just a financial dispute; it's a battle for control over one of hip-hop's most valuable estates and the preservation of The Notorious B.I.G.'s legacy through proper management of his intellectual property and charitable foundations.

Industry Impact and Broader Implications

This legal dispute highlights the complex challenges that arise when managing the estates of deceased artists, particularly when substantial sums of money are involved.

The lawsuit also underscores the growing value of hip-hop intellectual property, with catalog sales reaching unprecedented levels as streaming platforms and music investment firms recognize the long-term value of classic rap catalogs.

As this case proceeds through the Delaware court system, it will likely shed light on the inner workings of one of hip-hop's most valuable estates and could influence how similar disputes are resolved in the future.

The case remains pending, with both parties expected to present their arguments in upcoming court proceedings.
