Walmart and a Dutch manufacturer have issued a voluntary recall of apple juice sold under Walmart's "Great Value" brand after the FDA found elevated levels of arsenic.

The affected products were sold across East Coast and southern U.S. states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

These apple juice products, packaged in 8-ounce bottles and sold in 6-packs, were discovered to contain arsenic levels of approximately 13 parts per billion (ppb), slightly exceeding the FDA's safety threshold of 10 ppb.

Refresco Beverages US Inc., the distributor of the recalled apple juice, initially announced the recall on August 15, 2024, with an update provided on August 26, 2024.

Despite the higher arsenic levels, there have been no reported cases of illness or health issues associated with consuming the affected Great Value brand apple juice.

FDA Class II Threat

The FDA categorized this recall as a Class II threat, which implies that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, though the risk of serious harm is minimal.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman stated, confirming that the recalled products have been removed from store shelves. Refresco also emphasized their commitment to consumer safety, stating that they are "working diligently to address the situation."

Environmental contaminants embedded in the soil, water or air where foods are grown, raised or processed can be present in foods.

Process contaminants, like chemical by-products, can form during food processing, especially when heating (cooking), drying or fermenting foods.

Contaminants

Inorganic arsenic, often found in contaminated drinking water, poses significant health risks. This includes cancer and birth defects, when regularly consumed.

The FDA continuously monitors the food supply for chemical contaminants, taking action when necessary to ensure food safety. The agency also regulates the use of chemicals in food production, packaging, and processing to prevent potential health risks to consumers.
