Download and practice on an app like Duolingo

Thanks to its built-in algorithm, Duolingo also quickly adapts to the skills of each learner, allowing them to gradually strengthen their weak areas. With time and ongoing use, this program can play a pivotal role in your becoming fluent across multiple native tongues.

Stream movies or TV shows with subtitles in another language

In order to truly become proficient in non-English tongues, you need ongoing exposure to them. This means not just doing the work on Duolingo, but also turning on Spanish, Portuguese, or other subtitles when you're watching your comfort shows on Netflix.

This not only helps you pick up new aspects of a different native tongue, but it also reinforces what you've already learned. Subconsciously, you'll begin to notice various patterns of the language that prove helpful as you're working to phonetically master it.

Travel to countries where the native language is not English

Being able to speak in multiple tongues while abroad definitely comes in handy. Though it's OK to travel even in the middle of your learning journey.

Ironically, going overseas can actually improve your language skills, especially if you're already studying on Duolingo and streaming with subtitles. Seeing signs and menus written in Italian, German, etc. often fortifies (and adds to) your linguistic skills.

If you struggle to communicate with the locals abroad, don't be afraid to lean on the Google Translate app. This tool allows you to input words - by typing or speaking - and then translate them to the language of your choosing. You can also take pictures of text and translate it into English in order to decipher its meaning.
