Scientists across the globe are increasingly warning that a potential Super El Nino event could make 2026 one of the hottest years — and possibly the hottest summer — ever recorded.

Climate experts say rapidly warming ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean may soon trigger an exceptionally powerful El Niño pattern capable of reshaping weather systems worldwide, bringing devastating heatwaves, droughts, floods, and ecosystem disruption.

Researchers from organizations including the UK Met Office, NOAA, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts have all expressed growing concern that ocean temperatures may reach levels associated with rare “Super El Niño” conditions.

Adam Scaife, head of long-range prediction at the UK Met Office, recently warned that the developing climate pattern could be “of record strength,” potentially driving global temperatures to unprecedented highs.

What Is an El Niño?

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate cycle involving unusually warm ocean temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator.

Under normal conditions, strong trade winds push warm water westward toward Asia and Australia while colder water rises near South America through a process known as upwelling. That colder water is rich in nutrients and supports marine ecosystems.

During an El Niño event, however, those trade winds weaken. Warm water begins drifting eastward toward the Americas, disrupting ocean currents and atmospheric circulation patterns around the globe.

This shift affects rainfall, temperatures, storms, and marine life across multiple continents.

What Makes a “Super El Niño”?

Climate scientists define a “Super El Niño” as an especially intense version of the phenomenon.

According to Mark Roulston of Lancaster University’s Climate Risk and Uncertainty Collective Intelligence Aggregation Laboratory, standard El Niño conditions occur when Pacific Ocean surface temperatures rise more than 0.5 degrees Celsius above average.

A Super El Niño typically occurs when those temperatures exceed 2 degrees Celsius above normal.

Only a handful of Super El Niño events have been recorded in modern history, including the major climate events of 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015-16.

Scientists say the current warming trend could rival or even surpass those historic episodes.

Global temperatures have already been climbing steadily because of greenhouse gas emissions and long-term climate change. A powerful El Niño layered on top of that warming could intensify extreme heat around the world.
