DOJ Launches Criminal Probe Into Trump Accuser E. Jean Carroll as Perjury Questions Shake High-Profile Civil Verdicts

The legal war surrounding President Donald Trump and writer E. Jean Carroll just took a dramatic and potentially explosive turn — one that could now reshape public perception of one of the most politically charged civil cases in modern American history.

According to multiple reports, including CNN, the U.S. Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into Carroll over allegations that she may have provided false testimony under oath during deposition proceedings tied to her lawsuits against Trump. The reported investigation centers on whether Carroll committed perjury while testifying that she had received no outside financial support for her litigation against the president.

That statement now sits at the center of a rapidly intensifying federal inquiry.

The revelation is sending shockwaves through legal and political circles because Carroll’s lawsuits against Trump resulted in two separate jury verdicts awarding her a combined $88.3 million in damages after jurors found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. Trump has consistently denied Carroll’s allegations and has continued fighting the verdicts through the appellate process, with both cases now pending before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Now, federal prosecutors reportedly want to know whether the integrity of portions of those proceedings may have been compromised from the start.

According to CNN, prosecutors are specifically examining Carroll’s 2022 deposition testimony given during questioning by then-Trump attorney Alina Habba. During that sworn testimony, Carroll allegedly stated she had received no outside funding connected to the litigation. However, reports indicate that roughly two weeks before trial, Carroll’s attorneys disclosed to the court and Trump’s legal team that billionaire LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman’s nonprofit organization had, in fact, helped cover some of Carroll’s legal fees and expenses.

That disclosure has now become a potential legal landmine.

Under federal law, knowingly making materially false statements under oath can expose a witness to criminal liability for perjury or false declarations. Whether prosecutors ultimately believe Carroll intentionally misled opposing counsel — or whether the discrepancy can be explained through legal nuance or misunderstanding — remains unclear. But the mere existence of a DOJ criminal investigation into a plaintiff who secured one of the largest defamation verdicts in American political history is extraordinary.

And the political implications are impossible to ignore.

The Carroll litigation became one of the defining legal and media flashpoints of Trump’s post-presidency years. Carroll first publicly accused Trump in 2019 of sexually assaulting her inside a Manhattan department store dressing room during the mid-1990s. Trump denied the allegation, prompting Carroll to sue for defamation. She later filed a second lawsuit in 2022 that added a battery claim and accused Trump of issuing additional defamatory statements.

The cases became national spectacles, amplified daily by media coverage, political commentary, and fierce partisan division.

But now, with the DOJ reportedly examining sworn testimony connected to the funding of the litigation itself, a new layer of scrutiny has emerged — one that raises broader questions about political financing, elite influence networks, litigation transparency, and the weaponization of civil litigation in high-stakes political warfare.

The name Reid Hoffman adds yet another combustible dimension to the story.

Hoffman is not merely a Silicon Valley billionaire. He is one of the Democratic Party’s most influential mega-donors and political financiers. Over the years, Hoffman has contributed millions to Democratic campaigns, political action groups, and institutional initiatives tied to elections, technology governance, and political activism. His influence stretches far beyond the tech sector.

Hoffman has reportedly been associated with the Bilderberg Group since at least 2011 and became a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in 2015. In recent years, he has increasingly emerged as a major figure in debates surrounding political influence, artificial intelligence governance, media ecosystems, and elite institutional power structures.

Then came another twist.

In October 2025, Hoffman’s name surfaced during a Senate hearing involving files connected to deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein. During questioning involving Attorney General Pam Bondi, Hoffman was referenced as one of Epstein’s “closest confidants,” according to statements made during the hearing.

That allegation generated enormous public controversy and fueled renewed online scrutiny surrounding elite political and financial networks. Hoffman has not been charged with any crime connected to Epstein, and no evidence has publicly emerged establishing criminal wrongdoing by Hoffman related to those claims. Nevertheless, the overlap between those hearings and the current DOJ scrutiny involving funding tied to the Carroll litigation is certain to intensify public debate.

From a legal perspective, the issue prosecutors may be analyzing is deceptively simple but potentially devastating: Was Carroll truthful under oath?

If prosecutors determine that false testimony materially impacted discovery, litigation strategy, credibility assessments, or jury perception, the fallout could be enormous. Defense attorneys across the country are now closely watching whether this investigation evolves into formal charges or remains merely an inquiry.

The implications could extend beyond Carroll herself.

If evidence emerges suggesting intentional concealment of litigation funding or coordinated political support structures surrounding the lawsuits, it could ignite broader demands for transparency involving third-party litigation financing — an issue already drawing growing concern among lawmakers and legal scholars nationwide.

Third-party litigation funding has exploded into a multi-billion-dollar industry in recent years. Critics argue that outside financiers can influence lawsuits, shape political narratives, or strategically weaponize civil litigation against public figures and corporations. Supporters argue such funding provides access to justice for plaintiffs who otherwise could not afford major legal battles.

This case now threatens to drag that entire debate directly into the national spotlight.

CNN also reported that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is reportedly not involved in the investigation. That distinction matters politically because Blanche previously served as one of Trump’s personal attorneys during appeals involving Carroll’s verdicts before later assuming leadership at the DOJ after Trump dismissed former Attorney General Pam Bondi in April.

The DOJ’s reported effort to distance Blanche from the matter appears designed to avoid accusations of conflict of interest or political retaliation.

Still, critics and supporters alike are already preparing for a legal and political firestorm.

Trump allies argue the investigation validates longstanding concerns that politically motivated actors weaponized the legal system against the president. Trump critics, meanwhile, warn that the investigation itself could become politicized given the president’s ongoing legal and political battles.

But beneath the politics lies a fundamental legal reality that every litigator understands: credibility is everything.

Civil trials involving allegations of sexual misconduct often hinge heavily on witness credibility, consistency, and sworn testimony. Any suggestion that material testimony may have been inaccurate immediately becomes fertile ground for appeals, post-judgment motions, credibility attacks, and public distrust.

The Supreme Court’s eventual handling of Trump’s appeals may now unfold against an entirely different backdrop than before.

And that changes the stakes dramatically.

Because regardless of politics, ideology, or personal views about Trump or Carroll, the integrity of sworn testimony remains one of the foundational pillars of the American justice system. If federal prosecutors believe that pillar was compromised in a case of this magnitude, the consequences could ripple far beyond one lawsuit — potentially reshaping public trust in politically charged litigation itself.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing.

But the legal aftershocks are already beginning.
