EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The World Cup final between Spain and Argentina ended with more than a championship trophy and a historic victory.

It also produced an ugly post-match brawl that has resulted in significant suspensions and fines for several Argentina players and officials.

FIFA has now handed down disciplinary penalties following the confrontation at MetLife Stadium, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the 2026 World Cup.

Multiple Argentina Players involved in World Cup Brawl

The disciplinary action comes after FIFA investigated scenes that unfolded almost immediately after the final whistle. The confrontation involved Argentina's Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina, among others, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala also became involved. Spanish midfielder Gavi was among the players caught up in the altercation.

FIFA's disciplinary process initially identified potential violations involving aggression and unsporting behavior.

The governing body formally opened proceedings against Paredes, Molina, Thiago Almada, Ayala and Spain's Gavi after reviewing the incidents from the final.

After Spain Wins the World Cup Final Argentina Explodes

Spain entered extra time against Argentina with the score tied 0-0. Ferran Torres eventually scored in the 106th minute, giving Spain a 1-0 victory and its second men's World Cup championship.

The celebrations quickly became overshadowed by the confrontation involving players from both teams.

Molina was involved in an early clash with Spain's Rodri as Spanish players began celebrating. The situation escalated as more players became involved.

Paredes was at the center of the most serious portion of the confrontation. He was accused of grabbing Spain defender Eric García by the throat before becoming involved in another physical confrontation involving Gavi. Almada was also identified by FIFA as having engaged in conduct that could constitute unsporting behavior.

Widespread Unsporting Behavior After World Cup Championship

The incident was not limited to players. Ayala, a former Argentina international and member of the coaching staff, was also investigated after becoming involved in the confrontation. Reports said he confronted Spanish players during the chaotic scenes.

FIFA's initial disciplinary announcement said its investigation involved possible violations of the organization's rules concerning aggression and unsporting behavior.

The governing body gave the individuals involved an opportunity to present their positions before final decisions were issued.

Harsh Punishments for Argentina Stars

Paredes received the most severe penalty of the group, with FIFA imposing a 10-match suspension for his role in the confrontation.

Molina was given a seven-match suspension. Both players were also fined $90,000.

The penalties reflect FIFA's determination that the post-match behavior went beyond the normal physicality associated with a highly emotional soccer match.

Almada and Gavi each received one-match suspensions. Ayala was suspended for three matches and fined $30,000, according to the disciplinary decisions reported Friday.

The different punishments reflect the individual allegations against each person and the disciplinary findings connected with their conduct.

Gavi, who was one of the Spanish players caught in the confrontation, had previously offered a more restrained assessment of Paredes' role. He said he did not believe Paredes necessarily deserved a suspension and characterized the physicality as part of the aggressive nature of soccer, while acknowledging that the scenes were a poor example for children.

Argentina Football Association Fined for World Cup Incidents

The disciplinary action extended beyond the individuals involved in the fight.

FIFA also fined the Argentine Football Association $321,000 for a range of incidents connected with the tournament. FIFA's disciplinary proceedings included alleged violations involving team misconduct, discrimination and racist abuse, match security and the use of sporting events for non-sporting demonstrations.

The broader disciplinary case involved incidents from multiple Argentina matches, rather than only the final.

One issue involved a political banner displayed by Argentina players after their semifinal victory over England. The banner referenced the Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls Las Malvinas. The political dispute over the islands has remained a sensitive issue between Argentina and the United Kingdom for decades.

FIFA's disciplinary proceedings also cited discriminatory chants and gestures, delays to match kickoffs, failures to follow match and security protocols, inappropriate messages and objects thrown by spectators.

Argentina Responds with Controversial Video

The disciplinary decisions came as tensions remained high between Argentina's soccer federation and critics of the team's behavior.

The Argentine Football Association released a video on X shortly before FIFA announced the punishments. The video alleged that Argentina had faced an "anti-Argentina campaign" during the tournament.

The emotional video highlighted Argentina's run to the final and its semifinal victory over England. Its message portrayed the team as having overcome criticism and adversity to reach another World Cup final.

Argentina ultimately fell short of defending its championship. Spain's victory marked the country's second men's World Cup title and made Spain the first nation to simultaneously hold the men's and women's World Cup championships.

The post-match controversy, however, ensured that the final would be remembered for events beyond the result.

FIFA Takes Tough Line on Conduct

FIFA's handling of the incident underscores the governing body's authority to discipline players and team officials for conduct that occurs during or immediately after international matches.

The organization's disciplinary code allows sanctions for aggression, unsporting behavior and other violations. FIFA's initial investigation specifically identified multiple alleged acts involving Paredes and Molina, as well as separate cases involving Almada, Ayala and Gavi.

The punishments could affect Argentina's roster well beyond the immediate aftermath of the World Cup, depending on how and where FIFA applies the suspensions to future international matches.

For Argentina, the controversy represents a difficult ending to a tournament in which the team reached the championship match but failed to repeat as world champion. For Spain, the celebrations that followed a historic victory were briefly disrupted by an altercation that has now generated a lengthy disciplinary record.
