A Bali vacation ended with an Australian tourist being deported from Indonesia and barred from returning for 10 years after he was allegedly caught on security camera engaging in a sexual act with a woman outside a residence in North Kuta.

Indonesian immigration authorities confirmed that the Australian, identified by authorities as BA, was deported to Brisbane on a Batik Air flight on Sept. 8. He was also placed on Indonesia's immigration blacklist for 10 years. Authorities said the action was intended to maintain public order and security involving foreign nationals in Bali.

Bali Tourist Faces Immigration Consequences

The incident occurred Aug. 22 in Tibubeneng village, North Kuta, in Bali's Badung Regency. Video of the alleged encounter was subsequently circulated widely online.

The man had been detained at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on Aug. 25 while attempting to leave Indonesia. He spent approximately two weeks in immigration detention before being deported.

According to reports, the alleged incident took place on a resident's driveway. A local woman reportedly encountered the pair while preparing to pray and alerted others.

CCTV Footage in Bali Triggers Investigation

The footage eventually went viral, prompting police and immigration officials to investigate. The woman involved has not been publicly identified.

Indonesian authorities characterized the behavior as an indecent act and said such conduct could affect public order and the reputation of the North Kuta tourism area. The incident also prompted a purification ceremony at the location, reflecting the importance of religious and cultural practices in the predominantly Hindu Balinese community.

The case received significant attention because Bali attracts millions of international visitors and has increasingly emphasized responsible behavior by foreign tourists.

Indonesia's New Criminal Code

The case comes after Indonesia's new Criminal Code took effect Jan. 2, 2026. Among its provisions are laws concerning adultery and cohabitation outside marriage.

However, the rules have important limitations concerning who can initiate a criminal complaint. Indonesia's Constitutional Court has explained that Articles 411 and 412 establish complaint-based offenses. Depending on the circumstances, complaints involving unmarried people can be made by their parents or children, while spouses can make complaints involving married partners.

Indonesia's police public-relations portal similarly reported that only specified family members can file complaints concerning adultery or cohabitation offenses under the new code.

That distinction is important because reports about Indonesia's new criminal laws have sometimes created the impression that unmarried tourists can automatically be arrested simply for traveling together or staying in the same accommodation. The legal provisions are more limited than that.

The alleged public conduct in the Bali case, however, brought a separate set of public-order and immigration considerations into play.

Authorities Stress Respect for Local Customs

Indonesian immigration officials said the deportation demonstrated coordination between immigration authorities and local law enforcement.

Ngurah Rai Immigration Office head Muhamad Novyandri said officials would continue strengthening immigration oversight and coordinating with law enforcement agencies when foreign nationals violate regulations.

The 10-year entry ban means the Australian tourist will not be permitted to return to Indonesia during the period of the sanction.

The case serves as a reminder that international travelers remain subject to the laws and immigration regulations of the countries they visit. Behavior that might not result in criminal charges in a traveler's home country can still produce immigration consequences abroad.

For this traveler, the result was deportation and a decade-long prohibition on returning to Indonesia.
