Sometimes the best deals get done before the clock even starts ticking. The Chicago Bears made sure of that this week, locking up running back D'Andre Swift on a three-year extension worth $33.75 million, according to reports Friday — a move that erased any suspense about his future just as free agency loomed on the horizon.

The Numbers Behind the Deal

Swift is reportedly set to pocket $27.5 million in guaranteed money, a figure that reads like a vote of confidence from a front office unwilling to gamble on the open market. The extension keeps him under contract through the 2029 season, effectively turning what could have been a walk-year gamble into a long-term commitment.

Beating the Free-Agency Clock

Before this agreement, Swift had been on track to hit free agency following the 2026 season — a scenario that would have sent him testing the market like a runner probing for the smallest crack in a defensive line. Instead, the Bears closed that door early, opting for stability over uncertainty and ensuring their backfield piece stays put well into the back half of the decade.

For Chicago, the extension reads as a bet that Swift's value on the field is worth locking in now, rather than risking a bidding war later when the stakes — and the price tag — could have climbed even higher.
